Empowering People, Providing Solutions. North Carolina is a state rich in forest resources with almost 60 percent, or 18.3 million acres, of the state covered in forests. The wise use of this resource is important for water and air quality, wildlife habitat, beautiful views, timber resources, and economic prosperity. With 35 million trees produced annually in 80 counties, North Carolina also ranks second in the nation for Christmas tree production.

Spotted lanternfly fact for you today! 🌿 What is the difference between these two spotted lanternflies?
Both are females, but the lower female is mated and gravid (ready to lay eggs), making her abdomen much larger than the unmated female above.

A great day of learning in Raleigh! 🌲💦

Abigail Ridge (NCFA) and Savannah Moore ( NC State University Extension Forestry) recently led a North Carolina Project Learning Tree (PLT) workshop for 15 engaged participants at the Walnut Creek Wetland Center. The session focused on the Forest, Water, and People activity bundle, exploring the vital connections between our natural resources and communities.

In this October blog, Extension Forest Management Specialist Jameson Boone shares why it's the perfect season to try nature bathing, manage invasive species while many are still green, and attend one of many local forestry events. Ever seen a spotted lanternfly preparing an egg mass? Until now, we've never caught it on video!
In this video, an adult female spotted lanternfly (SLF) is excreting and spreading a waxy egg mass coating over freshly laid eggs inside a shingle lampshade trap. The waxy coating helps camouflage the eggs and protect them from harsh weather over the winter.
Egg-laying season starts in mid-September and continues until the end of November. These lampshade traps, like the one in the video, are a great way to reduce SLF populations. Once they lay eggs in your trap, destroy the eggs to ensure they won't emerge next year.
