From Nepal to NC State, Rojan Karki’s commitment to agricultural Extension, education and rural development continues to shape his academic journey.

Karki, a Ph.D. candidate in Agricultural and Human Sciences, is one of four CALS students selected for the 2026 Goodnight Doctoral Fellowship. His research focuses on agricultural Extension, adoption, career adaptability and the role of Extension in career pathways.

We recently spoke with Karki about his journey to NC State, his research and his hopes for using research, education and Extension to create meaningful change in communities in Nepal and beyond.

Did you know about our Agricultural Education and Human Sciences (AEHS) academic program?

AEHS prepares students to understand challenges, find solutions and extend knowledge to create healthier communities for youth and families.

With diverse areas of study and dedicated faculty and staff with expertise across agriculture, education and the human sciences, students are prepared for a wide range of careers. Our graduates teach in formal and non-formal settings, work with nonprofits and community and government agencies, and pursue careers across agriculture and the human sciences.

No matter the career path, AEHS students are prepared to make a difference in the lives of farmers, families, youth, individuals and communities.

For Amira Alexander, making connections has been a consistent theme throughout her educational and professional journey.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in nutrition sciences and a minor in Extension education from NC State in 2016, Amira returned to pursue a master’s degree in youth, family and community sciences. Today, she works as a grants operations coordinator at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College while also supporting nonprofits through consulting work focused on grants management, compliance, governance and organizational capacity.

Her journey may not follow a traditional career path, but each step has been connected by a common purpose: helping people and strengthening the organizations that serve them.

From finding community and mentorship at NC State to building systems that help under-resourced organizations thrive, Amira continues to connect people, resources and opportunities to create meaningful impact.

At 45, Michelle Case began working toward a college degree while balancing work, family and her involvement in agricultural education and FFA.

When she needed a bachelor’s degree that would fit her life, she found NC State’s Agricultural Science Online program.

Six years later, she graduated with honors — one step closer to her goal of becoming an agricultural teacher.

For AHS Department alumna Carrie Barnhardt, the challenges facing farmers are personal.

Growing up on her family’s fourth-generation dairy farm, Barnhardt planned to continue the family tradition. But while she was studying Agricultural Science at NC State, the Great Recession forced her family to auction off their herd.

Today, Barnhardt owns a farm in Rowan County with her husband, where they raise chickens and sheep and grow cut flowers. Her experience has also shaped the way she supports others facing difficult moments in agriculture.
