Get ready for the next feature in the Spring Research Slam Runner-Up Series, Aarushi Shroff! Aarushi is part of a team testing plant pathogens and their resistance to certain agricultural treatments, in order to lessen the threat of disease in our crops. This study will ultimately help to protect our food crops and enhance disease management!

Please help us congratulate Aarushi on being selected as a runner up in this year's Spring Research Slam!

Next up in our Spring Research Slam Runner Up Series is Sabrina Greer! Sabrina is doing an Honors thesis on how US intelligence does more than just warn about threats. Their goal is to understand how sharing or withholding intelligence affects trust, burden sharing and collective security among allies. This is important because intelligence is not just about defense- it can also strengthen or strain alliances.

Please help us to congratulate Sabrina on the incredibly important work she is doing for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences!

Our pack of researchers is doing amazing things! This group of students was selected from many applicants to represent NC State University at the 2026 ACC Meeting of the Minds Conference at the Florida State University!

Over the weekend, these 5 NC State students, representing three different college across campus, traveled to Tallahassee, FL to present their research in poster sessions to hundreds of visitors and other participants at the conference. We are so proud of the work they've done and their accomplishments thus far! Please help us congratulate them on being selected to present their research at this national conference!

After a short break, we're so excited to continue our Spring 2026 Research Slam Runners Up Series, and the next feature goes to Sydney Gardner! In Fall 2025, the Canine College at NCSU CVM conducted research determining how reward type and preference shape the efficacy of command reinforcement in dogs. Here you can see Sydney training Shuri on how to "sit" using a treat reward. Syndey and her team found that dogs prefer treats to physical touch as a reward. This kind of information can guide caregivers toward more efficient training methods, highlight the importance of a dog’s preference when training, and support efforts to make dogs more adoptable.

Please help us congratulate Sydney on being selected as a Runner Up!

The next student researcher in our Spring Research Slam Runners-Up Series is Arnav Tala! Arnav is doing impressive work creating an AI system for engineers who are designing circuits for technologies like 5G/6G communication, radar systems and medical imaging devices. Arnav and his team are developing a collection of circuit designs and their performance data, and will use machine learning to create an AI system for individuals to build many circuit designs almost instantly!

Please help us congratulate Arnav on the incredible work he's doing, an on being chosen as a Runner-Up in this year's Spring Research Slam!s://canva.link/lb0b9fxxteb370q

Next up in our Research Slam Runner-Up series is Kayla Ruff! Kayla is studying the reproductive patterns of birds relative to the ban of the pesticide DDT, which was known to threaten avian populations. Her team uses participatory science, meaning they use volunteer-collected data to analyze migratory patterns, diets and habitats and how they correlate with reproductive success.

Please help us congratulate Kayla on the incredible work she's doing and on being selected as a Runner Up for this year's Spring Research Slam!

Next up in our Spring Research Slam Runner-Up Feature Series is student researcher Ruby Blue! Ruby is developing a specialized physical model of a water distribution system designed to identify and mitigate cyber-physical risks. By integrating a new communication system, which is often missing in existing models, Ruby’s work provides a critical platform for researchers to simulate and defend against potential attacks on our public water supply.

Please help us to congratulate Ruby on all of her hard work and on being selected as Runner-Up!

Next up in our Research Slam Runners-Up series is Ashley Murphy! Ashley's research is focused on the conversations that parents have with school-aged children both before and after a presidential election. Parents are a source of information for their children about presidential elections, yet little is known about how these conversations with young children unfold and change based on the outcome of the election. Ashley's team surveyed nearly 1,000 parents and found that the conversations happen most often before the election, and that the post-election conversations have a more optimistic tone if the results went their way, and a more pessimistic tone if the results did not go their way.

Please help us to congratulate Ashley on her research contributions, and on being chosen as a Runner-Up in this year's Spring Research Slam!

This semester, we had so many incredible applications for our Spring Research Slam that it was nearly impossible to select just a few students!

We wanted to honor the work being done by so many amazing NC State students by naming several of them as runners-up. This is no small accolade. The research that these undergraduates are conducting has real-world impacts; see for yourself!

In highlighting the research of our runners-up, the first feature goes to Trenton Ford! Trenton is working with mentor Nils Peterson to study the effects of urban noise vs. the sounds of nature on the human body. They are monitoring the heart rates of 89 students in various locations to gather data to hopefully influence city planners to include more green spaces in areas most frequented by humans. This will improve mood and health passively, while increasing urban biodiversity.

Please help us to congratulate Trenton on his hard work, and on earning the distinction of Research Slam Runner-Up!
