The College of Natural Resources at North Carolina State University is finding sustainable solutions at the intersection of the built and natural environment. Our award-winning teachers and researchers work alongside students to generate new knowledge and technology, engage with industry and communities, and provide professional leadership for the future. With just over 1400 students, our college is one of the smallest at NCSU, allowing us to give our students personalized attention with the resources of a larger university. College of Natural Resources’ unique approach to teaching focuses on experiential education in the classroom and beyond. We enrich the learning experience through field trips, internships, service-learning projects and study abroad. Our three departments, Forestry and Environmental Resources, Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management, and Forest Biomaterials are ranked among the nation's best in their fields for both undergraduate and graduate programs.

Across the eastern U.S., wildfire risk is growing, creating new challenges for communities, forests, and the people who manage them.

NC State is helping address those challenges alongside the Eastern Fire Network (EFNet), a multi-institutional effort bringing together researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to better understand and prepare for wildfire in the East.

“Wildfire is a complex problem that can’t be addressed by any one discipline," said Dr. Robert Scheller, associate dean for research and professor in the College of Natural Resources. "Through EFNet, we’re bringing together scientists and practitioners from across disciplines to understand this challenge from different perspectives and develop research and solutions that can make a difference in the East."

🍦 Sweet moments, great company and a lot of College of Natural Resources pride. 🐾

Last week, we welcomed families to campus for an ice cream social during Parents and Families Weekend. This event, hosted by the CNR Offices of Advancement, Academic Affairs, and College Culture and Community, was a special opportunity for families to meet the people who make our college such a welcoming place.

Last week, students in the James Buzzard Leadership Program enjoyed a “HiveMind” experience with Bee Downtown in Durham. 🐝

The experience was designed to serve as a launching point for students to elevate their performance, deepen their relationships, foster a stronger sense of community within their own “hive,” and build lasting morale.

The two-hour program began with an hour-long Hive Tour, where students learned how to carefully open up a hive, use a smoker and more. In addition, there was a keynote with Leigh-Kathryn Bonner '15, founder and CEO of Bee Downtown. During her talk, Leigh-Kathryn discussed lessons from her own career as an entrepreneur and leader.

Students deeply resonated with the experience and walked away with meaningful insights and valuable lessons they could carry forward. One student said, “One thing that really stood out to me was when Leigh-Kathryn was mentioning how bees react when something goes wrong with their hive. Instead of focusing on themselves, they immediately focus on protecting and helping each other so they all survive.”

“This made me think about how important it is for leaders to put others first and support their team, especially during difficult situations. In the future, I want to be a leader who emphasizes being empathetic and considerate of others by taking the time to understand their perspectives and recognize their needs.”

Meet Ma**ca Thomas ’21, an NC State College of Natural Resources alumna who is putting her environmental science education into action as a lead basin planner with the NC Dept of Environmental Quality.

Today, Ma**ca works to support healthier waterways across the White Oak and Lumber river basins — developing water resource management plans, creating tools to communicate water quality information and building relationships with communities and stakeholders.

"My best advice would be to become an initiator, an explorer and a relationship-builder. I’ve found these three qualities have been the biggest positive contributors to my professional career," Ma**ca said. "They can help propel you and expose you to new things, opportunities and ideas."

From NC State student to chief operating officer, Bree Nidds ’19 is making an impact in the Lehigh Valley tourism industry.

At Discover Lehigh Valley, Bree helps drive strategic growth, strengthen partnerships and create economic impact across the region. She has been recognized with the Smart Meetings Catalyst Award: Rising Star and named to both the Professional Convention Management Association’s “20 in Their Twenties” and Destinations International’s “30 Under 30” lists.

"At its core, my job is about helping make the Lehigh Valley a better place to live, work and visit," she said. "Every dollar spent by a visitor at a hotel, restaurant, attraction, retail store or event contributes to the local economy and supports residents throughout our community."

One month. Two countries. A new perspective on what’s possible. 🌎

For environmental sciences student Kenna Talhelm, studying abroad in Sweden and Norway wasn’t just about seeing new places — it was about seeing the world, and her future, differently.

Through the International Sustainable Resource Use study abroad program, Kenna spent a month learning about sustainability and natural resource use across Scandinavia. Her experience took her from hiking in Abisko National Park and exploring the landscapes of northern Sweden to visiting an iron-ore mine and climate research station, learning about sustainable urban design and cruising through Norway’s breathtaking fjords.

"This study abroad experience really reaffirmed my interest in urban design and planning," Talhelm said. "As we travelled throughout Sweden and Norway, I found myself drawn to the ways in which their cities were designed differently from ours and how that allows them to live in such cold weather and to be more sustainable."

Meet first-year College of Natural Resources student Natalie Nameth. 👋

A member of the Environmental First-Year Program, Natalie is pursuing opportunities to deepen her understanding of marine science and explore solutions to environmental challenges.

It was thanks to scholarships that she was able to make her decision about which college she would attend. Natalie is a recipient of the Bob Kellison Family Extraordinary Opportunity Scholarship, which bridges the financial gap facing many students.

“I was going to do biomed, but in my junior year [of high school] I took a climate change biology class and I was so interested in it. I started looking into the climate sciences but I have always been interested in aquatic life, so my goal is to research coral reefs from an environmental perspective.”

Natalie is currently a member of NC State's EcoVillage and the Marine Science Club. She is also an Extraordinary Opportunity Scholar.
