Tangled seaweed vs. ocean microplastics ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸฅŠ

Capturing microplastics in water has been a challenge because plastic particles come in many different sizes. Researchers led by Prof. Orlin Velev were inspired by floating seaweed mats and โ€œNeptune balls" to create superadhesive meshes that trap large millimeter-scale plastics & tiny nanoscale particles from freshwater and saltwater alike!

This summer we teamed up with The Engineering Place to host rising 11th and 12th graders for an immersive camp experience. A huge shoutout to: camp leaders Prof. Leah Granger and CBE Academic Advisor Emily Resk, guest speaker Prof. Michael Dickey, our rockstar grad students (Nikki Hammond, Morgan Hurst, and Will Smith) and the BTEC team for making the week an unforgettable success! ๐Ÿ™Œ

The CBE Graduate Student Association had an amazing time at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences for Dรญa de la Ciencia y la Cultura! ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐ŸŒŽ

They brought hands-on engineering demos to life, sharing our passion for chemical and biomolecular engineering with curious minds of all ages. Big thanks to the volunteers and everyone who stopped by the outreach booth to experiment and celebrate science with us!
