“The dark hue of the violet, The snow white lily’s bloom…”

, July 19, 1867, the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina founded SAU with a bold vision: “to afford young men and women superior advantages for obtaining a thorough academic education, to train and equip teachers for efficient service, and to prepare young men for the Holy Ministry.”

For 159 years, that vision has been rooted in faith and committed to academic excellence, transforming lives, strengthening communities, and preparing generations of servant leaders. Today, more than 11,000 living alumni carry the Falcon legacy into classrooms, boardrooms, churches, military service, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and communities around the world.

Today, we celebrate not only our founders, but also the countless students, alumni, faculty, staff, donors, churches, community partners, and friends whose steadfast belief in SAU has helped preserve and strengthen this historic institution across generations.

As we honor our past, we also embrace our future, with renewed purpose, innovative programs, and a tireless commitment to transforming students through academic excellence, grounded in our faith, while preparing leaders for a changing world. Our story is not defined by the challenges we’ve faced, but by the lives we’ve transformed and the future we’re building together.

For 159 years, Falcons have risen. Together, we will continue to soar.

Happy Founders Day! 💙🐦🙏🏾 The Episcopal Church

A Lasting Tribute to President Emeritus Dr. Prezell R. Robinson

SAU proudly honors the life and enduring legacy of President Emeritus Dr. Prezell R. Robinson through an official Resolution adopted by the Office of the President and the Board of Trustees in recognition of his extraordinary leadership, distinguished service, and lifelong commitment to Saint Augustine’s.

A distinguished member of the Class of 1946, Dr. Robinson devoted more than four decades of service to his beloved alma mater, including 28 years as the University’s eighth president. His visionary leadership transformed our campus, expanded educational opportunities for generations of students, and elevated Saint Augustine’s influence across North Carolina, the nation, and the world.

While buildings and honors bear witness to his remarkable leadership, Dr. Robinson’s greatest legacy lives on in the lives of the students, alumni, faculty, staff, and communities he inspired through his unwavering commitment to education, faith, and service.

As we reflect on his extraordinary life, we remain grateful for his enduring contributions and recommit ourselves to the mission he served so faithfully, to sustain a learning community in which students prepare academically, socially, and spiritually for leadership in a complex, diverse, and rapidly changing world.

His legacy is now part of ours to carry forward.

May President Emeritus Dr. Prezell R. Robinson’s memory continue to inspire generations of Falcons for years to come.

Some lives leave a legacy that cannot be measured by titles alone.

This weekend, the SAU family joined Dr. Robinson’s loved ones, alumni, former and current University leaders, members of the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina, elected officials, faculty, staff, students, and friends to celebrate the remarkable life of our eighth president and alumnus, Dr. Prezell R. Robinson, ‘46.

For nearly five decades, Dr. Robinson devoted his life to Saint Augustine’s, helping shape not only the physical campus but generations of leaders whose lives continue to reflect his vision, scholarship, faith, and tireless commitment to service. His impact extended far beyond our campus and strengthened higher education, The Episcopal Church, North Carolina, and communities around the world.

It was especially meaningful to witness generations of Falcons united in honoring a man whose life reminds us that institutions endure because people choose to invest in one another. His legacy continues to challenge all of us to lead with integrity, serve with humility, and believe in the transformative power of education.

As we celebrate a life so well lived, we also recommit ourselves to the mission he served so faithfully for more than 40 years, to sustain a learning community in which students prepare academically, socially, and spiritually for leadership in a complex, diverse, and rapidly changing world.

SAU was also honored to present the Robinson family with an official Resolution, adopted by the Office of the President and Board of Trustees, recognizing President Emeritus Dr. Robinson’s extraordinary life, distinguished service, and enduring legacy.

Thank you, Dr. Robinson, for showing us what visionary leadership, steadfast faith, and lifelong dedication look like.

May God continue to comfort the Robinson family, and may President Emeritus Dr. Prezell R. Robinson rest in eternal peace.

On behalf of 𝗟𝗲𝗮 𝗙𝘂𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 and our president, 𝗠𝗿𝘀. 𝗟𝘂𝗰𝗶𝗹𝗹𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗮𝘀 𝗟𝗲𝗮, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the family of 𝗗𝗿. 𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘇𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗻𝘀𝗼𝗻. At the remarkable age of 105, Dr. Robinson completed his earthly assignment on Monday, June 29, 2026, leaving behind a legacy that will forever enrich the halls of Saint Augustine’s University and the countless lives shaped by his leadership.

Dr. Robinson served with distinction as President of 𝗦𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝘂𝗴𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲’𝘀 𝗨𝗻𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆, guiding generations with wisdom, dignity, and a steadfast commitment to academic excellence. His influence reached far beyond the campus grounds by touching communities, inspiring future leaders, and strengthening the foundation of higher education in Raleigh and beyond.

Mrs. Lea, a proud graduate of Saint Augustine’s College, holds Dr. Robinson’s contributions in the highest esteem. She considers Saint Augustine’s the solid foundation that prepared her to pursue and earn degrees from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the National War College, Defense University, at Fort McNair in Washington, D.C. Her academic journey also led her abroad to study at L’Universite de Lyon in Lyon, France. Mrs. Lea attributes these extraordinary opportunities to the formative education, encouragement, and institutional strength she received at Saint Augustine’s, an institution shaped profoundly by Dr. Robinson’s leadership and vision.

We pray that God’s peace will surround the Robinson family and all alumni across the nation during this season of remembrance.

May the comfort of cherished memories and the assurance of a life well-lived bring strength in the days ahead. Dr. Robinson’s impact is eternal, and his light will continue to shine through every life he touched.

Happy Fourth of July from SAU!

As our nation celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, we also recognize that the promise of liberty has unfolded differently across generations. For African Americans, legal freedom has existed for approximately 161 of those 250 years, a reminder that our nation’s journey toward “liberty and justice for all” has been one of continual progress and perseverance.

Just two years after the abolition of slavery and 15 days after the nation’s Fourth of July celebration in 1867, SAU was founded by the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina with a bold mission for formerly enslaved men and women: To sustain a learning community in which students can prepare academically, socially and spiritually for leadership in a complex, diverse and rapidly changing world.

For nearly 159 years, that mission has transformed lives through education, opportunity, faith, and service.

Today, we celebrate not only our nation’s founding, but also the enduring power of education to expand opportunity, strengthen communities, and help fulfill America’s highest ideals.

Happy Fourth of July from the Falcon family.
