Catalyst Programs at the Science House, North Carolina State University Catalyst is a high school program designed to create STEM opportunities for students with disabilities.

Catalyst is a free program located at the Science House, North Carolina State University, for high school students with disabilities interested in STEM Careers, providing: STEM Content and Skills, Workforce Readiness Skills and Paid STEM Internships. Students learn STEM content and skills through hands-on labs and research, participate in STEM field trips, mentoring opportunities, and internships, improve workforce readiness and soft skills, and explore STEM educational pathways and careers. Catalyst also provides students job exploration counseling, workplace readiness training, work-based learning experiences, counseling on postsecondary options, and development in self-advocacy.

🎉 Adapt, play, and empower!

We had an absolutely amazing time during our Life 101 Session: Engineering for Good with NC CATCH! NC CATCH is a incredible organization that adapts toys for students with disabilities and distributes them completely free of charge so every kid gets to experience the simple joy of play.

A huge thank you to our phenomenal instructors for guiding us through the world of accessible design:

🔬 Mark McManman – Materials Science Engineering student at NCSU and proud Catalyst alumni who came to help too!

Our participants had a blast diving into hands-on engineering—learning to solder, altering circuits, and modifying toys to make them fully accessible for students with disabilities! 🛠️⚡

We also want to give a massive shoutout and heartfelt thanks to Natalie, Kelly, and Sam Duffort (a wonderful Catalyst family!) for generously donating our pizza lunch and hosting fun games and candy for everyone after all the hard work was done. 🍕🎮🍬

A huge thank you to Dhruv Kabsad, Mechanical Engineering graduate student at NC State, for an incredible session on HVAC Heat Load Calculations!

Our students got hands-on experience applying real engineering concepts while getting an insider look at exciting careers in Mechanical Engineering. Beyond the technical skills, they also dove into vital workforce readiness training—learning how to network, analyze job postings, navigate search engines, and master the application process for future STEM jobs and internships.

We are so proud to see these future STEM leaders building both technical expertise and career-ready skills to launch their futures! 🚀⚙️

A BIG Thanks to Enbridge Gas for their very generous donation to Catalyst, which in part was used to have this wonderful event, exploring Marine Science, Marine Science Careers. This went along well with our STEM Session on Marine Science at NC State last week in Marine Since. We also toured UNC-Wilmington to learn about their Marine Science and other STEM Programs and then off to learn about STEM used in the Military at NC Battleship! We appreciate them making this opportunity possible! What a phenomenal day filled with science, sea life, and inspiring connections! 🌊✨
We kicked off the morning on Masonboro Island with Jake and the fantastic team at Carolina Ocean Tours, diving headfirst into marine science, exploring coastal ecosystems, catching crabs, and hunting for shells! 🦀🐚
Next, we caught up over lunch with our wonderful Catalyst graduate, Maysie! It was so inspiring hearing all about her journey studying nursing at UNCW—we couldn’t be prouder of her! 🩺🩵
Our afternoon kept the momentum going with a fantastic tour of UNC Wilmington thanks to Vincenzo Ruggiero and Vanessa Castellano from the Upward Bound Math and Science program. It was great connecting with them and meeting their inspiring high school students! 🎓📚
To top it all off, we headed to the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA for an incredible STEM tour arranged by Kevin McCarthy and led by fantastic tour guides. 🛳️⚙️

A big thank you to Olivia Cisneros, Pulp/Paper Segment Leader at ABB, for sharing her expertise on networking, job search strategies, and essential workforce readiness skills to help us prepare for careers in STEM! 💼🔬

We were also joined by Timberlyn Duncan, Marine Science Graduate Student at NC State University, who led an inspiring discussion on "People, Place, and Oceans: An Integrated Approach to Communicating and Conducting Research." We built models and explored how to integrate community, culture, and place into policy planning, science communication, and local outreach. 🌊🗺️

Grateful for these insights as we continue using our science skills to serve and empower our communities! 🚀

It was wonderful catching up with Dixon and Ethan, who are thriving in college, and seeing Donovan and Natalie stepping up as incredible mentors. We’re also thrilled to watch David and Ravi dive into the Youth Lead Conference as participants, building powerful advocacy skills for the future.
