THROWBACK THURSDAY
What can an avalanche teach us about terrestrial ecology? A lot.

Students in FORS 2020: Terrestrial Ecology visited an avalanche study site to see how snow, slope, elevation, forest structure and vegetation all shape mountain ecosystems.

The big takeaway: disturbance is not only destructive. It can also create new habitat, change forest patterns and shape how ecosystems recover over time.

Field visits like this help UNM-Taos Natural Resources students move beyond the textbook and learn how ecology works across real Northern New Mexico landscapes.

Meet Dillon Alexander, who runs the Natural Resource Management program in the LISTOS grant at The University of New Mexico-Taos.

Natural Resource Management gives students a foundation in biology, botany, geology, water resources, soils and more.

Students learn in the classroom and in the field. They study ecology, look closely at plants and specimens, and get hands-on experience with the natural world.

Dillon knows the program from both sides. He was once a UNM-Taos student in the same program. Now he helps prepare students for advanced science degrees and careers in natural resources.

Graduates from the program have gone on to work with state programs, the Forest Service, NRCS, federal and nonfederal agencies, and nonprofits.

Rural entrepreneurship doesnโ€™t grow in isolation. It grows through networks, trust, local leadership, and the people building the conditions for founders to thrive.

Thatโ€™s the focus of ๐—œ๐—ป๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ ๐—ฅ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—˜๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฝ ๐—˜๐—ฐ๐—ผ๐˜€๐˜†๐˜€๐˜๐—ฒ๐—บ๐˜€, a panel discussion during our upcoming webinar on ๐— ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐˜€๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—ฅ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—”๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฐ๐—ฎ'๐˜€ ๐—˜๐—ป๐˜๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐—ฒ๐˜‚๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น ๐—ฆ๐—ฝ๐—ถ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐˜.

Moderated by Rhonda Ladig, our Director of Entrepreneurship, this conversation will bring together four ecosystem builders working across rural America:
โœฆ Monica Bilak, Sprocket Paducah โ€” Paducah, Kentucky
โœฆ Eric Harry, Wachholz Innovation & Entrepreneurship Center at FVCC โ€” Northwest Montana
โœฆ Rose Reza, UNM-Taos HIVE โ€” Taos, New Mexico
โœฆ Emily Wells, Greenlight & Gig East โ€” Wilson, North Carolina

Together, theyโ€™ll explore what it really takes to support rural entrepreneurs, connect local assets, strengthen ecosystems, and build opportunity that lasts.

The webinar will also include a deep look at rural entrepreneurship trends and a walkthrough of the Rural Entrepreneurship Index with Amanda Weinstein, our Director of Research, as well as a fireside chat between Jay Bockhaus, our Chief Investment Officer, and Dusty Birge, Founder and CEO of Fast Forward from Kearney, Nebraska.

Rural communities are already building whatโ€™s next. Join us to see whatโ€™s working โ€” and whatโ€™s possible.

UNM-Taos students took learning outdoors with a visit to the Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project in Velarde.

As part of their field-based work in sustainability and natural resources, students explored geology, land use, cultural history and what it means to care for land in Northern New Mexico.

Mesa Prieta offered a powerful reminder: land stewardship is about more than ecology. It also means respecting cultural landscapes, protecting heritage and learning with humility.

Featured students: Elias Griegos and Katie Pacheco.

Meet Xander from the IT team at The University of New Mexico-Taos.

At UNM-Taos, IT is a small team that does a little bit of everything. They help with networking, scripting, computer support and the everyday tech questions that come up across campus.

For Xander, one of the best parts of UNM-Taos is the small campus community.

โ€œEverybody kind of knows each other,โ€ he says. โ€œEverybodyโ€™s working towards the same mission.โ€

That mission is helping students become the best version of themselves.

Meet Victoria Martinez, financial aid advisor at The University of New Mexico-Taos.

Victoria helps students understand one of the most important steps in paying for college: the FAFSA.

The FAFSA connects students to federal grants, state grants, scholarships and other types of financial assistance. Students should complete it every year and apply early so they can meet key deadlines.

UNM-Taos also works with local partners, high school guidance counselors and career counselors to help students move from high school into college.

Questions about financial aid or admissions? UNM-Taos is here to help make the process easier.

June is Pride Month, a time to recognize LGBTQ+ communities, honor the history of Pride and support a campus where every student can feel seen, respected and welcome.

At UNM-Taos, our students bring many identities, stories and strengths to our campus. That diversity makes our community stronger.

Happy Pride Month from UNM-Taos.
