Meet Dr, Katherine Lehman !
Dr. Lehman is the Associate Professor and Chair, Communications. We had the pleasure getting to know her thoughts on our questions!
Have you always wanted to be a professor of Communications?
I knew I wanted to write about topics that mattered to me, and I’ve always loved the classroom. So, I started out in journalism and public relations and then moved into academia, where I could write and teach about my interests in media, gender studies, and cultural history. I’m fortunate to have found this career path.
What would the best advice you could give a senior graduating with a Communications degree be?
I’d take advantage of the resources the ELCDC offers to prepare and network with alumni. Also connect with professional organizations such as Philly Ad Club; there are lots of ad-agency tours and networking opportunities online these days. If you are a co-major or have multimedia skills, be sure to play up your strengths. Be patient and persistent— you may not land your dream job right away.
If you could be a student in one of your courses which would you chose?
Of my regular offerings, COM 219: Magazine and Feature Writing offers a chance to write about your passions while building your journalism skills. We get to read magazine articles and watch feature broadcasts. Of my elective courses, any class in which we’re discussing gender and media representation is fun and invigorating.
What was one way you passed the time during the Covid Quarantine?
I’ve spent a lot of time with my energetic kids outdoors. I also pursued research into media – the Hulu dramas “Mrs. America” and “The Handmaid’s Tale” are two of my latest interests as I research representation of feminism and the movement in television
