📚 Top 11 Most Challenged Books of 2025 | #2: The Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky 📚
This coming-of-age novel follows Charlie, a quiet high school freshman, as he navigates friendship, first love, mental health, grief, and the challenges of growing up. Through a series of letters, Charlie shares his experiences with honesty, vulnerability, and hope.
Why has it been challenged? The Perks of Being a Wallflower has been challenged for its depictions of sexual content, LGBTQ+ themes, drug and alcohol use, profanity, and discussions of mental health and trauma. Supporters of the novel argue that these topics reflect real-life experiences faced by many teens and provide opportunities for meaningful conversations about empathy, identity, and resilience.

Sold, a powerful novel by Patricia McCormick that follows Lakshmi, a young girl from Nepal who is deceived and sold into a brothel in India. Written in free verse, the story highlights the devastating realities of human trafficking while exploring courage, survival, and hope.
Why has it been challenged? Sold has faced challenges because of its depictions of sexual exploitation, abuse, violence, and mature themes. While some readers have objected to this content, others believe the novel provides important insight into human trafficking and encourages empathy and awareness of a global human rights issue.
