What a delightfully spooky evening with Dr. Frank McAndrew! 👻

The College of Science had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. McAndrew for our Discover Science Lecture Series presentation, The Science of Ghosts (and Creepy Things in General), where we explored the psychology behind why certain people, places, and experiences give us the chills! 👀

Beyond the lecture, we were thrilled to welcome Frank to our First-Generation Student Center, where he connected with invited students from the Hitchcock Project for Visualizing Science. He also joined us for a special episode of the Discover Science Podcast, featuring hosts Arianna Thokasakis, Ph.D. student in Psychology researching a related topic, and Garrett Barmore, Director and Curator of the W. M. Keck Earth Science and Mineral Engineering Museum and an avid Nevada historian.

With Garrett’s museum building set to be the focus of a paranormal investigation later this month, the conversation was especially timely! 👌

Thank you, Dr. McAndrew, for sharing your expertise and helping us explore the fascinating science behind the unexplained!

🐝 What can bees teach us about fighting fungal infections? 🔬

Meet Tugba Selvi, a fourth-year doctoral student in the University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of Chemistry, who is exploring how bacteria living alongside solitary bees could help scientists discover new antifungal compounds. 🧪

As a first-generation college graduate, Selvi is combining her passion for scientific research with her lifelong dream of teaching. Through natural products chemistry, she hopes to contribute to the discovery of new medicines while inspiring the next generation of scientists. 💙

Her journey is a powerful reminder of how curiosity, perseverance and a love for science can open doors to discovery and make a difference in the world.
