Sorry, y'all - we have to cancel this week's QC. Our speaker has a family emergency out of town they have flown the coop for.

Beth and I have noticed that we are cancelling a bit more often lately and waiting until the last minute to do things a lot more often lately - largely due to busy lives. As such, we are going to take a break, recoup, and regroup.

As always, stay safe and stay curious!

March 12 - let's do this!

We'll be back in two weeks with Ben Carrion Schaefer and a vengeance to wreak havoc on the misunderstood role of automation in engineering design and stomp out human error!!!

Join us at Northside Drafthouse and Eatery that Wednesday at 7 p.m. for good conversation, good refreshments, and possibly good weather. See you there!

KAAHN! Wait - I mean, COOOLD!!!!

Cooler heads have prevailed (see what I did there), and we are going to postpone QC until March 12 when we hope learning about automation and electronics won't require a parka and heated socks.

Stay warm! Stay safe! Stay curious!

We're back next week (Feb. 19) with Dr. Benjamin Carrion-Schaefer for National Engineering Week!!! We will hear about how automation is improving design in electronics.

We also have our new glasses! Obviously, the main draw is most definitely our speaker - but the chance to win on of these new pint vessels is a nice side benefit.

See you next Wednesday!

Ohmygosh – I am so excited for trivia tonight! I’ve been working on questions this morning, and they are AWESOME. Not that you need bribery, but we’ll have mugs and Northside Drafthouse gift cards for our winners.

Can’t wait to see you all tonight!

Did you know Santa Claus was originally from Turkey, and that he's around 1,750 years old?

YOU DID (or not)? Well, you should join us at the next Quenching Curiosity when we do all trivia, all night (actually, from 7-8ish). We will quiz you over recent research news, research news spanning the year, and - of course - some holiday themed information. Forget studying for exams, study for the important stuff. Like our trivia!

It is that week of the month again when we gather all of our curious friends and celebrate inquiry, research, and fun!

THIS WEDNESDAY, November 20, is one of our most favortist QCs of the year as we bring in last year’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) graduate winners to give short (three minute) presentations about their work and open up the floor for questions. It’s always a fun time, and these talented young researchers always have a way of amazing us with their brilliance and clarity.

Regardless if you think 'Nightmare Before Christmas' is a Halloween movie, a Christmas movie, or both (it's both), we can all agree that this excellent movie really kicked stop-animation back into the limelight when it came out 30 years ago (yeesh, I didn't realize I was that old - I mean it was that old).

Come hear about one of our favorite movies from one of our favorite people, Dr. Christine Veras, as she talks about it and animation! See you at Northside Drafthouse and Eatery on the 16th!

Wednesday! Clearing the Smoke of BBQ Magic

When considering American staple foods, barbecue definitely falls in the top five. Even the act of barbecuing is a sacred American pastime--friends and family gathered in the backyard, a cooler full of ice-cold drinks, the grill or smoker working its magic. It’s the secrets of this magic that Dr. Jeremiah Gassensmith, this month’s Quenching Curiosity speaker, will reveal on Wednesday, Sept. 18, at Northside Drafthouse.

Raised in Indiana, Dr. Gassensmith wasn’t exposed to a lot of good barbecue, but when he moved to Texas, “I immediately built/bought a smoker and started learning.”

For Dr. Gassensmith, an avid food lover and chemistry and biochemistry professor at UT Dallas, barbecuing is more than a fun way to spend a weekend or summer holiday.

“Barbecue is the Zen of cooking,” he said. “It can neither be rushed nor ignored. The smoke and smells coming from the cooker soothe the soul and allow time for deep reflection.”

Whether you use BBQ sauce or can’t agree on which state does it best, join us at Northside Drafthouse to discover the history of this truly American meal and the chemical magic behind it.

See you tomorrow!
