The University of Texas at Dallas hosted the inaugural Father Patrick Desbois Summer Academy on Genocide, Justice and Remembrance, bringing together graduate students, scholars and practitioners from around the world.

Presented by the Ackerman Center for Holocaust Studies and Yahad-In Unum and made possible by a $1 million endowment from the Edward and Wilhelmina Ackerman Foundation, the two-week academy explored mass violence, sites of remembrance and research methods including forensic investigation, testimonial research and digital humanities.

Jeff Price is helping UT Dallas students take emerging media beyond traditional gaming and animation. As head of the animation and games program, Price leads students working with virtual reality, augmented reality, digital twins and immersive simulations. The Orchid Giving Circle has generously recognized the Center for Children and Families at UT Dallas with a $10,000 grant to support the expanding Play With Me program, which provides parental support and developmental screening services to Mandarin- and Spanish-speaking communities.

The Play With Me program is a free 10- to 12-week playful learning program designed for children ages 0 to 3 and their parents. Through toys, nursery rhymes, interactive music and movement, children learn to build vocabulary, develop school readiness and strengthen parent-child bonds. launched this program to bridge a critical outreach gap for UT Dallas’ neighboring communities.

The grant provided by creates a strong foundation that benefits young children long after the instruction ends, with a focus on rapid brain development. One parent in the program said, “Giving my child choices transformed our relationship and reduced tension,” while another noted, “We learned to understand emotions, not just behavior.”

Alumna Builds Career Connecting People with Art

“It’s a lot of storytelling and a lot of story listening,” Kathleen Alva BA’17 says of her work as a museum educator at the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, California, near Los Angeles. Through the Eugene McDermott Scholars Program, the Hobson Wildenthal Honors College, the Archer Fellowship Program, internships, study abroad and dance, she developed the skills she now uses daily ― interpreting art, connecting with audiences, training volunteers and helping visitors find their own stories in museum spaces.
