High School science teacher and WSU Tri-Cities alumna Katy Andrewjeski (’08 Elementary Education) returned to campus this summer to help Professor Bin Yang and other researchers investigate new methods for turning agricultural waste into bioplastics and biofertilizers.
The opportunity was made possible thanks to the M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust’s Partners in Science program, which allows science educators to take part in cutting-edge research projects at leading science institutions.
For Andrewjeski, who also helps operate a family farm, the experience was particularly eye-opening, prompting her with new ideas for bringing real-world science back to the classroom at Connell High School, where she teaches.
“That’s one of the things I’m most excited about, taking what I learned through my summer research and turning it into authentic learning experiences for my students,” Andrewjeski said.
