The WSU Viticulture & Enology Department provides research, outreach and education to increase the success of the Washington Wine, and to prepare students for successful careers in the wine industry. Educational options include Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees in viticulture and enology, and online certificates in viticulture or enology. WSU Viticulture & Enology (V&E) had its beginnings in the 1930s with the pioneering work of horticulturist Dr. Walter Clore. Clore worked collaboratively with industry members to explore opportunities for the expansion of the wine and juice grape industries in Washington. He was joined in 1960 by microbiologist Dr. Charles Nagel whose knowledge of wines and winemaking practices greatly advance WSU wine/grape research and extension programs. The collaboration of these two scientists and their partnership with Washington’s farmers and early investors, supported the growth of the Washington wine industry, and laid the foundation for what is now the only viticulture and enology degree program in the Pacific Northwest. Over time, the V&E Program continued to grow and develop with the industry. In 2002, a V&E major was instituted; the V&E online professional certificate was created in 2003; and in 2015, the Ste. Michelle Wine Estates WSU Wine Science Center opened in Richland on the WSU Tri-Cities campus. The Wine Science Center significantly increased the visibility of the V&E Program regionally, nationally, and internationally, and created space for the program to grow, and in 2023 the program became the Department of Viticulture and Enology. Today, WSU Viticulture and Enology is recognized worldwide as the premiere institution in grape and wine research, extension and education.

Register now for the upcoming WAVEx webinar on May 14, from 12:30-1:30 p.m. that will share new discoveries of what happens to tannins as w**e ages in bottles.

Webinar content stems from a four-year research project funded by the Washington State W**e Commission and led by Dr. Andrew Waterhouse, emeritus professor, University of California, Davis, and Dr. Jim Harbertson, enology professor, Washington State University. The collaborative project explored chemical reactions and sensorial impacts of chemically modified tannins created as w**e aged in bottles, and tracked the formation of tannins that had been chemically modified in commercial w**es aged up to 20 years.
