Its mission and purpose is to spread the word of GOD in song and fellowship and praise, across Kentuckiana. Led by its impeccable arranger and pianist Reginald Walters and with the tireless leadership of Eric Abercrumbie, the University Ensemble / Gospel Ensemble of EKU helped to change the lives of countless numbers during its tenure on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University, starting in 1967.
Not only could they deliver praise and worship in a fashion far unique from their peers, but equally the choir was able to sustain an offer a repertoire that spanned the horizons of all music, from the classical to the gospel. During this time of social change and racial identification, the ensemble served as a beacon of light and hope, delivered by voices who not only sought the dream, but lived the experience, on the campus of EKU. Each and every Sunday, the nearly 80 voices of young, engaged and mostly African American students, spread the word of GOD in song, across not only Kentuckiana, but also as far south as Florida and to the lake shores of Chicago. The prize historical contributions of the choir, is now permanently reserved in its inaugural album "We've Come this Far by Faith" and its second album, "In the Beginning"
