Students stopped by the Compass today to find out about how they can "go beyond the compass" this school year! Global Learning study abroad advisors and program leaders were available to speak to students about all of the great places they can study and intern abroad.

During Virginia Commonwealth University's first Week of Welcome, Hernan Bucheli, Ph.D., vice president for strategic enrollment management and global initiatives, gave a rousing welcome address to the new students attending the 2026 Convocation. Dr. Bucheli's enthusiasm and inspirational words offered an encouraging message to all students for a successful school year.

"Whether you're joining us from across Virginia, another state, or from one of 53 countries from around the world, you are now part of this wonderful community. Among you are as of today, 4,579 first year students, and 1,614 transfer students, our largest transfer class in 5 years.

Today marks the beginning of an exciting chapter in your academic and personal journey. And on behalf of the Division of Strategic Enrollment Management and Global Initiatives, welcome to VCU and welcome to the Ram family.

Your paths may be different, but one thing is the same. You belong here."

At today's "Welcome" ELP Tea Time, new and returning students and guests were welcomed as they enjoyed time making new connections and rekindling old friendships. We're hoping this is a great start to a successful and enjoyable school year for all!

Hernan Bucheli, Ph.D., vice president for strategic enrollment management and global initiatives, gave encouraging and welcoming words to the nearly 130 new international students attending yesterday's International Student Orientation.

"VCU is ranked as a top 20 international global institution. So that's kind of the institution you're coming to. And this is a place where we support research and collaborative learning. So that that journey is very important. But we're also focused on community efforts. We emphasize that the entire VCU community is is here to support you. And, we want you to be involved outside of the classroom."

We would like to thank our current students who participated in our International Student Panel during ISO today! We appreciate you spending time with our new students imparting your knowledge, experiences and useful information regarding being an international student at VCU.
