While navigating life as an international student in the U.S. can be challenging, Virginia Commonwealth University can help international students find their way from graduation to their ultimate destination...employment! This webinar brings together experienced immigration advisors from VCU's Global Education Office to discuss the various legal pathways for international students to gain practical training and employment experience in the American job market.

Our first Global Cafe of the semester, Garlic Across the Globe, was fun and exciting as we collaborated with VCU Sustainability to serve students delicious dishes cooked with love AND garlic grown from the gardens of VCU! Students and staff served dishes beginning with pan con tomate, Aglio e Olio, white rice and veggie stew, and an Italian-American pasta and beans dish.

Thanks to VCU Sustainability for coordinating this fun event with us!

At the semester's first VCU Globe Speakers Series event, we will welcome the Honorable Danny Avula, Mayor of Richmond City, on Wednesday, Oct. 23, from 12:30 - 1 p.m. in the James Branch Cabell Library, room 303 (901 Park Ave.).

In a structured Q&A style conversation, Dr. Avula will reflect upon his personal, academic and professional journey, and the cultural experiences that have shaped his leadership approach today. Students are invited to submit questions as a part of their registration process to be asked during the session. The discussion will be moderated by Jatia Wrighten, Ph.D., assistant professor of political science at VCU.

The VCU Globe Speakers Series, hosted by VCU Global Learning, brings accomplished professionals to VCU to share how global experiences shape leadership, cultural agility, and career success. This event is open to all VCU students, faculty and staff.

Virginia Commonwealth University will participate virtually in the 15th annual Africa Business Conference held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, Oct. 6 – 8, 2026. Hernán Bucheli, Ed.D., vice president for strategic enrollment management and global initiatives, will participate in a roundtable Institutional Leaders Panel among other deans and administrative leaders from around the world. The panel will be moderated by Patricia Cummins, Ph.D., president of the Africa Business and Entrepreneurship Research Society (ABERS), and VCU professor of French.

The panel will explore opportunities to promote bilingualism in French-speaking and English-speaking Africa, in addition to examining the possibilities for creating joint and dual degrees, engaging in joint research, and greater academic opportunities for students.

“VCU sees tremendous opportunity to build lasting, mutually beneficial partnerships with institutions across Africa where deeper collaboration can open new pathways for students, faculty and researchers,” Bucheli said.

Various activities and events throughout the day not only offered more information about studying abroad but also provided ways for students to build connections within the VCU community.
