Happy Thursday!! Today we are highlighting Prostate Cancer...

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among Hispanic men, with about 13,900 new cases expected in 2018. Among the major racial/ ethnic groups in the United States, Hispanic men have intermediate prostate cancer incidence rates that are slightly lower than those in non-Hispanic whites.

During the past 12 years, the Prostate Cancer Foundation has raised more than $230 million to support aggressive prostate cancer research. During that time, U.S. government funding for prostate cancer research has increased 20-fold from $25 million per year in 1993 to over $500 million in 2004—largely as a result of the advocacy efforts of the Prostate Cancer Foundation.

Tomorrow will be our final day of highlighting different cancers that effect our communities, please stay tuned...

Happy Hump Day! Continuing our Minority Awareness Week...Today we are highlighting Breast Cancer!

Hispanic/Latina women tend to be less aware of breast cancer and their risk factors for getting the disease. Many have limited access to health care as they don’t have health insurance. Also, language barriers and a lack of knowledge about the healthcare system can keep some women, who are foreign-born, from accessing care until they are in pain from an advanced stage breast cancer.

They also have higher delay rates for following up on abnormal screening rates as well as delaying diagnosis and treatment for breast lumps they discovered themselves. These factors can contribute to having more advanced cancers at the time they present for care.

Stay tuned for tomorrow's post...

Feliz Martes. Continuing our Minority Cancer Awareness Week....Today we are highlighting Testicular Cancer.

April actually serves as Testicular Cancer Awareness Month.

Men that are at most risk are:
1. Men who are infected with HIV.
2. Men with a genetic problem caused by having an extra X Chromosome.
3. Men with personal or family histories of testicular cancer.

We truly hope that this information is helpful and everyone uses it to educate family members or your community. Stay tuned for tomorrow...

Manitas on the Move | This year for RAÍCES Week, our Hermandad is focused on "Salud, Bienestar, y Comunidad" - Health, Wellness, and Community. Today, we highlight our Hermana Kimberly Rodriguez from Alpha Zeta Chapter. Here is what she has to say about wellness:

"I chose to become a Chiropractor, because I was called to serve. I didn’t search for Chiropractic, it unexpectedly came to me my senior year at VCU. My role is to check people’s spine’s for any possible nerve interferences that prevents them from functioning at an optimum level. Chiropractors are wellness Doctors. Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life.

I do my best each day to live as healthy as a I can , especially as a women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome. I workout out 4-6 days a week, meal prep constantly, and do my best to stay at a healthy state of mind by always finding news ways to “self-care”. I want to motivate people that you can do anything you set your mind to."

Through her instagram page , Kim aims to empower, educate, and give new meaning to PCOS. Keep up the good work Kim Rodriguez!

Since Theta Sigma has been fully reactivated...we have set different goals for this chapter. One being helping and supporting our undergraduate Hermanas in our area. With the help of Theta Sigma Executive Board and other Hermanas we were able to fund our first Theta Sigma Undergraduate Señorita Scholarship. This years recipient of the 1st Theta Sigma Undergraduate Señorita Scholarship was Hermana Vicki Reyes Hernández.

Hermana Vicki Reyes Hernández is a proud Hermana of the Alpha Rho chapter at the University of Virginia since Spring 2016. She is a rising fourth year studying Spanish and Speech Communication Disorders. As an aspiring bilingual speech language pathologist, she will be attending graduate school. However, before graduate school, she intends to complete a gap year program that will allow her to work or perform service abroad in a Spanish-speaking country in order to hone her Spanish and to gain global experiences that she can one day introduce into her bilingual therapy.

We are very proud of her and all of our Undergraduate Hermanas!
