Virginia Commonwealth University's Department of Fashion Design and Merchandising is a proud part of

The VCU Department of Fashion offers both Fashion Design and Fashion Merchandising tracks. The curriculum is industry-driven and all faculty members have worked in the industry. Fashion Design students learn professional processes for garment construction, patternmaking, draping, and fashion drawing. Fashion Merchandising students learn the planning it takes to offer the right merchandise, at the

The department holds an annual juried fashion show at the end of each year that features garments made by junior and senior design students and selected by a panel of industry experts. A class of junior and senior Fashion Merchandising students are responsible for producing the show.

Follow along with Chloe, a first-year, VCUarts Fashion merchandising student, to create repeating patterns, fashion flats, and line sheets in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator for her class, Technology in Fashion Merchandising, taught by Professor Lopez.

For this project, she needed to showcase 24 activewear garments for the upcoming season. Chloe drew inspiration from the Paris Catacombs and created a mock collaboration between Nike and the ACLU. Finally, Chloe assumed the roles of designer, merchandiser, and sales representative for her line, and presented her capsule to the class and professor.

The inauguration of the first female governor of Virginia is a monumental event, and of course, fashion plays a key role. In collaboration with the Spanberger Inauguration Committee, the fashion department announced to its students, an informal “fashion competition” the first week of classes.

The challenge was for students to envision two looks for Governor-elect Abigail Spanberger for two marquee events: the swearing-in ceremony and the Inaugural Ball. With a very quick turnaround time, 23 students rose to the challenge using and pushing their creativity, research, and technical skills to deliver thoughtful and impactful work under real-world constraints.

The result is a collection of work that reflects both adaptability and innovation across disciplines. This opportunity highlights the interdisciplinary strength of VCUarts Fashion, showcasing how design and merchandising students bring distinct yet complementary perspectives to real-world creative projects.
