New Robertson School Summer Camp Introduces Middle School Students to AI Literacy
📅 June 15–19 | 🎓 Rising 6th–8th graders | 📍 VCU | Registration now open at chs.vcu.edu/summer-camps

The Robertson School of Communication, in partnership with the VCU College of Humanities and Sciences, is hosting a Generative AI summer camp "The AI Imagination Lab" for rising 6th–8th graders from June 15–19.

Hosted by Joshua J. Smith, PhD, and Scott Sherman, co-founders of the Media + AI Initiative, this hands-on program introduces students to how generative AI works and where it appears in everyday digital spaces like games, social media, and school tools. Campers will experiment with brainstorming ideas, creating images, and developing stories using AI while learning how to stay in control of the technology.

The program also emphasizes media literacy and responsible technology use, helping students recognize misinformation, understand bias, and protect their privacy online. Each day blends creative challenges, collaborative projects, and guided exploration with real AI tools. Students leave the week with practical digital skills, stronger critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of how to use AI responsibly.

🚀 History in the making at the Robertson School! 🚀

We are thrilled to announce that the Robertson School’s MASC 439 Agency classes are competing in the PRSSA National Bateman Case Study Competition for the first time in our school’s history! Two teams representing our Public Relations sequence are stepping up to this prestigious national challenge.

Guided by faculty mentors Dr. Mariam Alkazemi and Professor Rayhan Daudani, our students are taking on the 2026 Bateman challenge on behalf of a live client, Access Newswire.

Their goal? To spread awareness about ACCESS Newswire’s educational program while applying the strategic planning, media relations, and campaign management skills they’ve learned in the classroom. This competition is the premier national public relations case study experience, providing the kind of "proving grounds" for our students. The competition provides unmatched real-world experience that translates directly into portfolio-ready work, résumé distinction, and often, professional opportunities.

The teams will conduct rigorous research and develop integrated marketing strategies to position ACCESS Newswire as a trusted partner for university communication needs. We are incredibly proud of our students for taking on this ambitious national stage and look forward to sharing their progress throughout the semester.

Go Rams, and go Bateman teams! 🐏✨

🌟 Faculty Spotlight: Celebrating National Excellence! 🌟

Huge congratulations to our very own adjunct instructor, Jennifer Thomas, for being named to the Qwoted 100 list of top publicists for the third time!

Jennifer has been recognized for her exceptional ability to build and maintain meaningful relationships with the media, standing out among over 135,000 users on the Qwoted platform. 🏅Congratulations to Kathy Argel, the recipient of the Faculty Award for the Master of Science in Integrated Communications! 🏅

Kathy has established herself as a "standout scholar" in the Robertson School’s master’s program, distinguished by her unique "professionalism, focus, and maturity.” Her career is a testament to the power of strategic planning and marketing; she is the CEO and founder of Allergy Kids Central where she led a food allergy awareness organization that reached over 5 million families globally and authored a children’s book featured in a national magazine. Between her previous experience at Virginia Commonwealth University as an HRIS analyst, she designed social media templates and redesigned internal digital platforms. In her current role as a brand strategy consultant at St Bernadine Home Care Services, Kathy brings an incredible depth of expertise in audience behavior and multimedia content creation to our community.

Each semester, Robertson School faculty choose outstanding graduating students in each academic concentration to receive a Faculty Award This is more than about just good grades, faculty look for students who really distinguished themselves while at VCU through campus involvement, amazing class work, or by being an unforgettable member of the Robertson School family. Separate awards are given out for graduate integrated communication as well as undergraduate concentrations like media production, advertising, and journalism. We congratulate again Kathy as The Master of Science in Integrated Communications recipient from last semester.

The industry is lucky to have you, we’ll be watching your career with pride
