Inhaled medicine sounds like it should be the simplest kind of medicine there is. You breathe it in, and it goes where it needs to go.

It usually doesn't. The respiratory system evolved as a filter, engineered to trap foreign particles high in the airway so that mucus can clear them. Even the most modern commercial inhalers deliver only about 20% of a dose to an adult's lungs; scale those airways down to a premature infant, and the figure falls to roughly 1%. Inhaled therapeutics fail in testing often because too little of the drug arrives, not necessarily because it is wrong.

For two decades, VCU researchers Michael Hindle, Ph.D., and P. Worth Longest, Ph.D., have been engineering that delivery problem from both ends. Hindle, the Peter R. Byron Distinguished Professor and interim chair of the Department of Pharmaceutics in the VCU School of Pharmacy, focuses on formulation. Longest, the Alice T. and William H. Goodwin Jr. Distinguished Chair in the VCU College of Engineering's Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, handles the device and transport side.

Named VCU's 2025 Innovators of the Year, the pair is now advancing a patent-pending platform that does something no inhaled product currently does: treat the lung's own damaged machinery and the disease at the same time.

 When Catrina “Nina” Chatman first learned about the role of pharmacists in organ transplant, she thought back to her childhood friend, Elisabeth, who lost her battle with cystic fibrosis after sustaining an infection following her lung transplant in 2010.

Psychiatric pharmacy in action!

Our P3 students at the Inova Campus recently took part in an innovative station lab focused on long-acting injectable antipsychotics (LAI-APs). Students got hands-on experience practicing specialized injection techniques guided by Resident Teaching Assistants and Behavioral Health Pharmacy Clinical Specialists Abby Stocks, Pharm.D., and Olivia White, Pharm.D. ('22).

Special shoutout to Drs. Ericka Crouse, Alexis Crawford, Krista Donohoe, Sharon Gatewood and Michael Clarke for designing and supporting this incredible learning experience!
