Our B.S. in pharmaceutical sciences faculty and staff led our PharmSci Connect event last month for first- and second-years in our B.S. in pharmaceutical sciences program, along with an eager group of incoming undergraduates traveling from all over. Together, they enjoyed campus and lab tours, a faculty panel and a mini student org fair.

Kudos to Emily Wigginton, who led the event, Logan Neel, Ph.D., and Federica Carnamucio, Ph.D., who led the campus and lab tours, alumni and industry partners, who shared their guidance with several students and parents during the org fair, Dean K.C. Ogbonna, Pharm.D., and associate dean of student success Nick Garcia, Ph.D., who joined students for lunch, and our faculty panel, Matthew Halquist, Ph.D., Vasco Pontinha, Ph.D., Doug Sweet, Ph.D., and Yan Zhang, Ph.D., for sharing advice with students!

Have you heard the legend of Typhoid Mary?

The winning submission for 2026's Emerging Pathogens short film/song parody contest in Drs. Leigh Anne Hylton Gravatt and Anne Masich's Infectious Diseases module for the Pharm.D. Class of 2028 is the scary, and scary accurate – at least in its presentation of pharmaceutical facts –, retelling of the tale of Typhoid Mary. This submission, voted the class' favorite, was developed by Batool Ayaz, Sophia Barberis, Bruna Leong, Taygun Loader, Abigail Tawiah and Austin Toms.

Angela Gates graduated this spring with her Pharm.D. – balancing her final weeks of clinical rotations with training for a half-marathon. It’s a fitting pace for a student who has spent the last seven years at VCU challenging herself, both in advocating for Richmond’s Spanish-speaking community as a volunteer with CrossOver Healthcare Ministry and in running nearly 10 races!

Jade L. Ranger, Pharm.D. — author, Bowl of Hygeia Award winner, and Inside Business Top Forty Under 40 honoree — addressed more than 80 VCU School of Pharmacy M.S., Ph.D. and Pharm.D. students, joined by faculty, staff, and more than 500 family members, friends, and loved ones, ahead of their graduation as part of the Class of 2026 at the May 8 Hooding and Diploma Ceremony.

She shared:

“You’ve spent years mastering information, building skills, and pushing through challenges. But while your training has prepared you with knowledge and expertise, what comes next will require something more. It will require judgment. It will require courage. It will require ownership.

And the truth is, you may not feel ready. But readiness is not a feeling. It’s a decision. You don’t become ready when the fear goes away. You become ready when you move forward anyway.

And I want you to hold on to that, because it won’t just apply today. It will show up repeatedly throughout your career. I know this because I’ve lived it.”
