Geographers in Action Senior Spotlight: Eugenia Echavarria

Meet Senior Eugenia Echavarria! Originally from Medellín, Colombia, Eugenia is a Geography and Environmental Studies major with a minor in Data Science & Statistics.
From researching deforestation and illegal roads in the Amazon and traveling to Peru, to studying Arctic ecosystems in Iceland and sustainable urban planning in Copenhagen, Eugenia has explored geography through research, fieldwork, and international experiences.
Most recently, she spent the summer conducting GIS analysis with the City of Ann Arbor’s Office of Sustainability and Innovations, using remote sensing to explore urban heat and identify areas for more trees and cooling. Now back at UR, she works with the Spatial Analysis Lab and Office for Sustainability, continuing to explore how spatial data can help address climate challenges!

Geographers in Action Senior Spotlight: Emery Elkinson‼️

Emery Elkinson (‘27) spent the summer as a research assistant at Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). During her nine weeks at UNAM, she worked on projects that examined the environmental and urban impacts of irregular human settlements in the boroughs of Tlalpan and Xochimilco, Mexico City. Her responsibilities included mapping census data, assisting with drone flights to create orthomosaic maps, working with residents to better understand the morphology of the settlements, and informing residents of the regularization process. As someone double-majoring in Environmental Studies and Geography and minoring in LALIS, this role gave her the opportunity to apply what she has learned in the classroom and improve her Spanish.

Geographers in Action Senior Spotlight: Charlie Orben‼️

is a Geography Major at UR and recently, he had an internship with NASA’s DEVELOP program! His team partnered with the Central Park Conservancy and used satellite imagery to analyze vegetation health and moisture patterns. He notes it to be an eye-opening experience, especially seeing how this work can be used to bridge the gap between science and real-world decision making.

Meet Professor Spangler!!!

"I'm an urban economic geographer researching the impact of digital real estate technologies on housing in the United States. Before UR, I taught at Tufts University and worked as Associate Curator for the Boston Public Library’s map center. I have made lots of maps and I love working with maps and spatial data. Having grown up in Henrico, I'm passionate about local issues and excited to become more involved in the geospatial community here in Richmond now that I live here again. I also play ultimate frisbee, enjoy climbing and biking, write creative nonfiction, and recently joined a sea shanty choir."

Geographers in Action Senior Spotlight: Alex Harry‼️

"During the spring of 2026, I went to Ecuador for a study abroad, where I learned Spanish and Ecuadorian culture. I learned about the biology, geography, and history of Ecuador and specific ecoregions at Universidad de San Francisco Quito (USFQ). I also made sure to travel throughout Ecuador to places such as Ambato for a cultural event (La Fiesta de la Fruta y de las Flores); the massive volcanoes of Rucu Pichincha and Chimborazo for hiking; and the rainforests of Yasuní National Park, the cloud forest of Mindo, and the Galápagos Islands for learning about their unique ecology."
