in 1920, Tennessee became the 36th state to ratify the 19th Amendment, securing the number of states needed to add it to the U.S. Constitution. The decisive vote came from 24-year-old state representative Harry T. Burn, who reportedly changed his position after receiving a letter from his mother urging him to support suffrage.

The amendment was formally adopted on August 26. But the struggle for voting rights was far from over. Poll taxes, discriminatory laws, and other restrictions continued to disenfranchise many Black women and other women of color for decades.
