Be sure to bring a valid photo ID; drink extra water and eat a good meal. If you're under 18, bring a completed consent form signed by a parent or guardian.

Did you know Hispanic history in Western Colorado reaches back to at least 1765?

In 1765, Juan María de Rivera became the first recorded Spanish explorer of southwestern Colorado. His expedition traveled around the San Juan Mountains and reached the Gunnison River near present-day Delta, where members of his party carved a cross, a name, and the date into a tree. Rivera also reported finding silver in what are still known today as the La Plata Mountains.

En 1765, Juan María de Rivera se convirtió en el primer explorador español del suroeste de Colorado del que se tiene registro. Su expedición recorrió los alrededores de las montañas de San Juan y llegó hasta el río Gunnison, cerca de lo que hoy es Delta, donde miembros de su expedición tallaron una cruz, un nombre y la fecha en un árbol. Rivera también informó haber encontrado plata en las montañas que todavía hoy conocemos como La Plata.
