We are a volunteer organization committed to celebrating the value of Georgia’s historical records, raising awareness of the many ways historical records enrich our lives, and recognizing archival and record-keeping institutions that maintain our communities’ historical documents. Georgia Archives Month is celebrated in October, and we encourage institutions throughout the State of Georgia charged with the care of Georgia’s historical records to hold public outreach events during that time.

In the midst of the 250th anniversary of the United States of America’s founding, we celebrate Georgia Archives Month 2026.

This year's theme is “Our Georgia Voices: Before and Beyond 1776."

“The journey toward this historic milestone is an opportunity to pause and reflect on our nation’s past, honor the contributions of all Americans, and look ahead toward the future we want to create for the next generation and beyond.” (America250.org)

We encourage local libraries, archives, and museums to use their celebrations to actively collect and share stories they find important in their communities. This could include initiatives such as oral history projects, educational programs, and community exhibits to help forward that mission. GAM 2026 is an opportunity to showcase and amplify unique or endangered Georgia voices

For the poster, please submit historic images that illustrate local stories that might not be as widely known, or include 250th celebration events during the month of July. The period of time can be from any point in Georgia's history, and can also include images of conservation, preservation, and community collection projects.

Please attach the following with your submission: a high-resolution .tiff of the image, caption, and citation information. To upload more than one image, you can fill out the form again. The deadline is July 31, 2026.

For the 2025 Georgia Archives Month, our focus turns to the outdoors and its connection to our lives. Where we live becomes a character in our narratives and impacts the story of who we are. Even within a short period of time, most Georgia residents have seen alterations to their towns, cities, and surrounding areas.

While some attention is paid to preserving the habitats through ecological means, it is also important to preserve the memory of these spaces through collections of oral histories, photographs, maps, and other documentation. We encourage the community to share their memories and other documentation of the area with local repositories to more fully document the stories of the place for the future.
