The Music Department & CDI hosted Mariachi San Josรฉ during Latinx Heritage Month this year. ๐ŸŽถIt was lovely to hear from Dr. Torres. A clinic: an informal educational session on Mariachi history was given and the way the ensemble works. That teaches an audience about specific techniques, styles, or equipment. Live Mariachi and food provided by La Taqueria in Ripon. We even had to wonder students who learned a dance and performed with the mariachi. It was a beautiful experience thank you Chamber Music & Jazz for making this event possible. Thank you to everyone that attended. โค๏ธ Today concludes Latinx Heritage Month. We hope to see you at our next event. Dรญa de Mu***os/ Day of Dead Oct.27 in Great Hall donโ€™t forget to register.

Que orgullo โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ / What pride to see how Janaly , Daisy , Zarahi , and Bri have grown as leaders in La Unida and Scholars. It brings me joy to see how they represent our Hispanic community at a PWI amongst our other talented Latinx students on campus. ๐Ÿซถ๐ŸฝItโ€™s beautiful to see how you all embrace being Hispanic and what it means to you. I have witness first hand how you have been able to open doors for younger generations through your advocacy on and off campus. Iโ€™m so grateful to have to opportunity to witness you all flourish into professionals in your fields of study and the liderazgo you show case outside and inside the classroom. Thank you for sharing your testimonies and knowledge with our campus community. โค๏ธ If you donโ€™t already follow La Unida for future events. We hope yโ€™all will join us at future events hosted by La Unida and the CDI.

Indigenous Peopleโ€™s Day is a celebration of the strength and resilience Native American tribes across the nation. They have continued to the growth our country through diverse traditions, languages , and empowering stories that have shaped who we are as a nation. It is also important to recognize how they continue to revitalize and preserve hundreds of indigenous languages that share cultural values and knowledge that has been passed down for generations. They continue to tell powerful stories through dance and oral history. Art pieces also show those stories. Native art is a cornerstone of American culture.

In 1982, Wisconsin was the first state to pass a statewide law protecting members of the LGBTQ+ community from discrimination in employment, housing, and public accommodations. The following year, Wisconsin also passed the Consenting Adults Law, decriminalizing consensual homosexual behavior between adults. A major milestone in LGBTQ+ rights history!

The way we show up and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month is represented in various ways. Through our traditions and the importance of unity. โค๏ธ It can be through our loved and the values that have been instilled in us. It is showed in higher education through the disciplines we study ๐Ÿ“š. The scholars we are and the professionals we are becoming to represent our communities. It is through our love of sports โšฝ๏ธ ๐Ÿƒ๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿ‹๐Ÿฝโ€โ™€๏ธ. The passion we show every single day not just during Hispanic Heritage Month. It is the goals we get to achieve because of our support systems and cultural roots. Itโ€™s the cultural capital we are given by our community to thrive ๐ŸŒฑ. It is an honor for me to witness the growth of Briseida and Xzavier. Si se puede como dice Dolores Huerta. โœŠ๐ŸฝAs the Director of Multicultural Affairs in a PWI I feel proud to see our Hispanic students flourish in academia , sports , research ๐Ÿง, student leaders and more. Keep celebrating ๐ŸŽ‰ the small wins and the big ones. The celebration continues! ๐ŸŽถ

This past month served as a pivotal period for my professional development. Engaging directly with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Grinnell College allowed me to advance my understanding of shared governance models. Furthermore, it provided valuable frameworks for implementing innovative community-building practices to implement on our campus. I would like to express my gratitude to Marc and his team for their hospitality and for sharing critical knowledge that will help inform our ongoing DEI efforts at Ripon College. It was wonderful to connect with esteemed colleagues Dr. Robert and Dr. Dina. ๐Ÿ˜Š I left feeling confident knowing I can identified actionable strategies for fostering a more inclusive community on our campus. Thank you to everyone that attended and shared profound insight to the work we do. I appreciate you all! ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿฝ I canโ€™t wait to see you all back on campus. Iโ€™m looking forward to a new semester full of growth ๐ŸŒฑ for all of us. Been working on new projects. Canโ€™t wait to host our open house in September 9th. Save the date โœ”๏ธ!
