Today's internship spotlight is on senior computer science major Griffin Keeler. Griffin was part of the NSF-funded Computational Methods for Understanding Music, Media, and Minds Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York. "My research focused on using machine-learning methods to investigate what information about music can be recovered from brain activity recorded with electroencephalography (EEG). I worked with neural and audio data, developed and evaluated computational models, and helped analyze how accurately the models could associate patterns of brain activity with corresponding segments of music. At the end of the program, I presented our work at the University of Rochester’s summer research symposium." "My coursework and research experiences at UWRF helped prepare me substantially for the internship. Courses in computer science and discrete mathematics gave me the programming and quantitative foundation needed to work with machine-learning models and large datasets, while my previous experience conducting EEG research at UWRF helped me become comfortable working with neural signals and thinking about neuroscience research questions. Together, those experiences allowed me to contribute to the project while continuing to develop my interests in neural engineering and brain-computer interfaces." Griffin plans to pursue a PhD in biomedical engineering or electrical and computer engineering after he graduates in the spring. His goal is to work in a lab that research brain-computer interfaces to restore speech and motor movement to those suffering from ALS.
