Welcome to the Center for Ideas and Society. We support humanistic studies and creativity at U.C. Riverside as well as locally, nationally, and internationally. Our aim is to help to advance collaborative and interdisciplinary work as a supplement and sometimes corrective to traditional disciplines and methods. We are also committed to disseminating the results of our programs to the City of Riverside community and beyond.

Focused writing time is the most important element of a writing retreat, which can be enhanced by: preparation; mindfulness and movement activities; and goal setting, commitment, and accountability in a friendly, collective environment.

The Center for Ideas and Society invites CHASS scholars, practitioners, and cultural collaborators to submit proposals for the 2027 Being Human Festival, hosted nationwide by National Humanities Center.

To expand the reach of UCR research and support public-facing scholarship in the Inland Empire and beyond, the Center will provide a 50% matching grant for all successful CHASS awardees. The initiative is funded through a partnership with the CHASS Dean’s Office.

Imperial Policing: Weaponized Data in Carceral Chicago
with Andy Clarno, Janaé Bonsu-Love, Ilā Ravichandran, and Haley Volpintesta

Part of the "'On Violence' Experimental Study Sequence" (pt. 3, Fall 2026)

Join us for a sequence of conversations with authors of key texts addressing violence, empire, liberation, solidarity, abolition, and the problem of “Man”/human. These live discussions will be led by students of the “‘On Violence’ Experimental Study Sequence,” taught by Prof. Dylan Rodríguez. Participants will have opportunities to engage with authors during the sessions, to whatever extent time permits. This is an experiment. We hope you will read the authors’ work prior to each study meeting, but as importantly, we aspire to cultivate a sense of intellectual collaboration, curiosity, and activated thought.

Please join UCHRI and the UC Humanities Network for a conversation on the new annual theme, “States of Exception, States of Emergence,” between Professor Eddie S. Glaude Jr. (Princeton University) and UCHRI Director Jaimey Fisher.

Professor Glaude recently published America, U.S.A.: How Race Shadows the Nation’s Anniversaries (2026), looking back from the 250th anniversary of the United States at how the US has struggled to acknowledge its complex history. For Professor Glaude, many milestone national anniversaries have re-affirmed myths as much as retrospectively reflected them. Those abiding myths and much-needed reflections occasion a critical evaluation of how collective memory has operated in broader US culture for centuries, particularly around concepts like innocence and freedom. This incisive intervention, at a key moment in the US’s history, is part of a broader examination by Professor Glaude at how our nation has long been a contested notion, struggling to acknowledge a past riven with violent inequality and to imagine a more just future.
