"Rhetoric is the study and practice of using language to persuade, inform, and motivate an audience. It can also refer to the way people communicate in everyday life.
Rhetoric is a foundational part of critical thinking and a college education. It's one of the three ancient arts of discourse, along with grammar and logic. Rhetoric originated in Ancient Greece as the study of communication and argument in public, political, and legal life.
Rhetoric involves:
Understanding language: Rhetoricians understand that language is constitutive, dialogic, and closely connected to thought.
Considering the rhetorical situation: This includes the purpose, audience, topic, writer, context, and genre.
Using rhetorical appeals: These include ethos, pathos, and logos.
Analyzing messages: Students analyze messages like political speeches, grant proposals, websites, and tweets.
Composing and delivering texts: Students learn to compose and deliver effective oral, print, and digital texts."
