What a great program!

VIA is proud to partner with the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine to help prepare the next generation of physicians to better understand and support patients with autism.

Through this collaboration, medical students learn directly from individuals with autism, their families, and professionals who work with them every day. Together, we’re highlighting how small adjustments in communication, environment, and expectations can make healthcare experiences more accessible, comfortable, and inclusive.

We’re grateful for the students’ curiosity, thoughtful engagement, and commitment to learning. By building understanding early in their medical careers, we can help shape a future where individuals with autism and their families feel understood, supported, and confident accessing the care they deserve.

Thank you to Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine for partnering with VIA to make a difference in the lives of individuals and families across our community.

Alex Rico has been recognized by the Virginia Tech Staff Senate for his service to the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine. Alex embodies Ut Prosim. His commitment to his co-workers and, by extension, to the school and the university is evident in every interaction and in the effort behind it. He is the finest example of a team player and a valuable asset to the team, known for quiet, unobtrusive leadership, kind and polite professionalism, a positive and reassuring attitude, responsiveness, dependability, and a problem-solver's instinct. His attitude and calming manner are an inspiration to those who work alongside him. As we approach tomorrow’s 17th anniversary of Morgan Dana Harrington’s tragic death tomorrow, we pause to remember her life and honor the enduring legacy she left behind.

The flowers placed at her commemorative wall at the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine remind us that Morgan’s memory continues to live in our hearts and throughout our community. We honor her memory through our commitment to educating future healers who will make the world a brighter place.

This year’s Richard C. Vari, PhD Endowed Lecture was a fitting tribute to the educator whose vision helped shape VTCSOM from the very beginning.

Dr. Aviad Haramati, a longtime friend of Dr. Vari, joined VTCSOM to deliver the keynote talk during TEACH Education Day. Dr. Haramati is with the Center for Innovation and Leadership in Education at Georgetown University Medical Center. His presentation, “Optimizing the Learning Environment: The Imperative for Educators to Engage Minds and Open Hearts,” explored how mindfulness training can help medical students and teaching faculty manage stress, build resilience and reduce the risk of burnout.

As the innovator behind VTCSOM’s founding curriculum, Dr. Vari helped shape an approach to medical education that recognizes the importance of developing the whole person — something that continues today through the school’s commitment to student wellness.

Thank you to Dr. Patty Vari and the entire Vari family for your continued support and for ensuring that Richard Vari’s legacy and vision for the school keeps growing.

The Virginia Tech Board of Visitors today appointed Richard Linton as the university’s 17th president.

Linton will succeed Tim Sands, who will continue to serve as president until Linton assumes office at the beginning of the 2027 spring semester.

Part of the Virginia Tech Alumni community, Linton received his bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, and Ph.D. from Virginia Tech. He currently serves as president of Kansas State University.

“My 40-year journey in the land-grant system began at Virginia Tech,” said Linton. “Having earned three degrees here, the opportunity to return home and serve as president of my alma mater is a true honor.”

So much of what makes VTCSOM work happens behind the scenes, and Alaina and Heather are two people who give so much of their time, talent and care in support of our students, faculty and the entire medical school community.
