Bill Peak M.A. '74 remembers Annie Dillard '67, M.A. '68, who died Sept. 15, in an opinion for the Star Democrat, "May flights of angels sing thee to rest."

"Not long after I arrived at Hollins College, where I would receive my Master’s Degree, I discovered the pick-up games of softball played on sunny afternoons in a field just south of campus," Bill writes. "The games were organized, as it happened, by a professor’s wife, a baseball fanatic who appeared at each game decked out in a complete Pittsburgh Pirates uniform, long blond hair flowing out from beneath a regulation ball cap. Little did any of us know that by the end of the year the professor’s wife, Annie Dillard, would be world-famous."
