Congratulations to Hailey for being awarded the Dilek Ogut Memorial Scholarship! Well done, and well deserved! 🎊This scholarship is to provide a scholarship to honor the memory of Dilek Ogut ’00, a graduate of MCC’s Dental Hygiene program and longtime hygienist at Cornerstone Dental LLP. This scholarship will support a Monroe County resident enrolled in MCC’s Dental Hygiene program.

June is Oral Health Month! Oral health = Whole body health!

Did you know?:

❤️ Heart Disease
-Gum disease (periodontitis) is linked to an increased risk of heart disease and stroke
-Oral bacteria can enter the bloodstream and contribute to plaque buildup in arteries
-Inflammation in the gums may increase systemic inflammation, a known heart risk factor

🩸 Diabetes
-People with diabetes are more likely to develop gum disease
-Gum disease can make it harder to control blood sugar levels
-Treating periodontal disease can help improve glycemic control

🤰 Pregnancy & Birth Outcomes
-Poor oral health is associated with preterm birth and low birth weight
-Pregnancy hormones can increase risk of gingivitis
-Preventive dental care is safe and important during pregnancy

🫁 Respiratory Health
-Oral bacteria can be inhaled into the lungs, increasing risk of respiratory infections like pneumonia
-This is especially important for older adults and medically compromised patients

🧠 Cognitive Health
-Studies suggest a connection between gum disease and cognitive decline or Alzheimer’s disease
-Chronic inflammation may play a role in brain health over time

🦴 Overall Inflammation
-Periodontal disease is a chronic inflammatory condition
-Inflammation from the mouth can contribute to worsening other systemic conditions
