OU AT THE ZOO! 🐻‍❄️🐧🐸🦦 Under a canopy of autumn leaves, AAHD Instructor, Eugene Clark, transformed the Detroit Zoo into an open-air studio for his ART 2100-Drawing students. A fantastic time was shared, as these students channeled the living pulse of nature into their drawings. Detroit Zoo Oakland CAS Oakland University

Today Oakland University Art, Art History and Design students and faculty took a field trip to Detroit organized by StudiOU, the art student club, to visit the “Georgia O’Keefe: Architecture” exhibition at the Detroit Institute of Arts; the exhibitions “Polly Apfelbaum: A Women’s Circle,” “Ferren Gipson: Re:union” and “Gyan Shrosbree’s Out Fit” at Wasserman Projects; the exhibition “Olayami Dabls: Iron, Rocks, Wood, and Mirrors. Looking Back” at Matéria Eastern Market; and “Tyree Guyton: Everlasting Life” at The Shepherd. Special thanks to Allison Wong of Wasserman Projects and Simone DeSousa of Matéria for taking the time to discuss their exhibitions with our students. A great time was had by all on a beautiful, crisp sunny day in the city.

Students in Professor Ryan Standfest’s course ART 3900 Special Topics: Comix, spent the day at Signal-Return , a letterpress printshop at LANTERN Detroit in Little Village . In a workshop led by Kevin Shureb and Elaisha Hilliard, Oakland University Art and Design students learned to hand set metal and wood type to accompany a relief block that they hand-carved an image in, resulting in a small edition of prints. Thank you Signal-Return! It is always an enjoyable and rich learning experience for our students.

Students in the course ART 2300: Painting (instructor Ryan Standfest), worked from drawings of landscapes that were translated into oil sketches on a toned canvas. The subject of the landscape was used here to explore a move away from direct observation and strict representation to create an image that is rooted in Expressionism. Students then applied an arbitrary color palette, meaning that they devised a color palette not based on observation or environmental light, but rather on more expressive goals. Shading does not need to be an issue, grass should not green- it could be purple, as an example. The sky should not be blue. The color should not represent observable reality, but must reflect an internal, emotional state turned outward.

2) David Ross
3) Ady Eicher
4) Samantha Hardy
5) Jordan Roberts
6) Rebecca Wagenknecht
