Today's Wall Street Journal includes a review of The Glitch, a 22-minute, two-character opera by composer Nico Muhly and librettist Greg Pierce, performed by baritone Lester Lynch and soprano and OU alumna Krysty Swann. “The intensity of the voices and both singers’ remarkable ability to act with their faces are such that their performances never seem oversized or artificial on the small screen. Instead, we are drawn into their worlds.”

🌟 Student Shout-out for Corrin Kliewer, music major 🌟
“Here is a video Corrin recently made for a national competition, but even more special are the words she shared about it. It embodies what “performing” and being a musician is all about. I’m so proud of her!” 😊 https://youtu.be/9FwWxB7yW74
-Sharon Sparrow, music faculty member and Detroit Symphony Orchestra flutist

From Corrin’s video: "I finished the recording for the NY Flute Club last night and wanted to share a little bit of my experience. This was one of the most exciting recording experiences I have had. From the moment I walked onto the Recital Hall stage to the moment I walked off, I was just so honored and happy to be there. Nothing else was on my mind except for the joy of being able to play my flute. I was not worried about messing up because I knew I had put the time in, and the last step for me was to simply enjoy playing in the time I was gifted. I was so calm that I did one take of the Nocturne by memory even though I had not tried to do a full run through by memory once, and this was the take I decided to use for my final submission.”

On February 5, the OU Department of Theatre hosted a two-hour masterclass with stage, film and TV actor Colm Feore. Mr. Feore is a 13-year veteran of the Stratford Festival and currently stars as Sir Reginald Hargreeves / The Monocle on Netflix’s Umbrella Academy. Seven current theatre students, as well as one prospective student, had the opportunity to work with him. Conor Rajan (senior acting major) said, “One of the greatest takeaways I got from Colm is, ‘yes have your dreams, yes shoot for the stars, but be happy and gracious and remind yourself how lucky you are to get to participate in this profession.’” Lynnae Lehfeldt, associate professor of theatre, said “Our students have had the rare opportunity of working with one of the best screen actors of our time.”

Oakland University School of Music, Theatre and Dance, Alums Rachel Edwin, Lauren Munaco, Bethany Moses, and students like Julia Donaven are singing in our Song of Freedom this Saturday! The Choral Artists of Michigan are pleased to present the Song of Freedom Choral Festival on Saturday, February 8, 2020, at 3:00 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 620 Romeo St, Rochester, MI 48307. The CAM Chamber Singers and Community Chorus present inspiring choral masterworks from American composers William Billings, Samuel Barber, and two musical premieres from film composer, J.A.C. Redford. In addition, this choral festival features the Macomb Children’s Chorus Troubadours and string ensemble accompaniment from the Metro Detroit Strings. At the conclusion of the festival, all choirs sing en masse to celebrate this exciting collaboration. Samuel Barber transcribed his passionate and best known work, Adagio for Strings, for choral forces, adding the text, Agnus Dei. The CAM choirs plan a stirring interpretation of this masterwork. The CAM Chamber Singers present other choral masterworks from Barber including “To Be Sung on the Water” and “Sure on this Shining Night.” Finally, the choir will premiere J.A.C. Redford’s Musica Dei Donum Optimi and Do You Bring Hurt to My Table. Redford is a film composer, orchestrator, and conductor. His composing credits include film music: The Trip to Bountiful, One Night with the King, What the Deaf Man Heard, Mama Flora’s Family and Disney’s Oliver & Company, Newsies and The Mighty Ducks II and III. He has composed the music for nearly 500 episodes of series television, including multiple seasons of Coach and St. Elsewhere, for which he received two Emmy nominations. General admission to the Song of Freedom Choral Festival is $10. For ticket information, email [email protected], or visit our page, @choralartistsofmichigan. Doors open at 2:30 p.m., and seating is on a first come, first served basis. The CAM Chamber Singers are comprised of local vocal music artists that sing professionally throughout the communities of Metro Detroit; members are drawn from the opera choristers and paid choral scholars. This ensemble performs choral masterworks and premieres new works by living composers. The Community Chorus is a choral ensemble open to community members that are passionate about the choral art. The choir enrolls a diverse membership, and they perform varied works. The combined choirs are under the direction of Dr. Jim Watson, Artistic Director, with piano accompaniment by Hannah Watson.
