Oakland University Department of Linguistics

Oakland University Department of Linguistics Linguists ask: "What is it that humans know when they know a language?" and "How do humans acquire that knowledge?" As we begin to answer these and related questions, we find fascinating insights into the nature of human cognition.

Please read the story of our alumnus Shukura Irwin ('09), and all the glorious comments! She is a SPL in Phoenix AZ.

May is Better Speech and Hearing (and Swallowing) Month.

Speech-language pathologists (SLPs), like Shukura Irwin, here in Phoenix, work to prevent, assess, diagnose, and treat speech, language, social communication, cognitive-communication, and swallowing disorders.

SLPs play a vital role in our patients' path of healing in many ways, including, improving cognitive-communication skills that have been affected due to chemotherapy (often referred to as β€œchemo brain”), and improving speech production and voice quality following oral and/or throat surgery. Thank you for all you do, Shukura! #FacesofCTCA

Interested in words and morphology? Wondering what LIN 300/500 Special Topics in Fall 2011 is about? Well, the "special" topic is morphology, and the course will be an introduction to the topic (just like introduction to phonology, syntax, etc - it just doesn't have it's own course number). This course can satisfy elective requirements at the 300/500 level. Registration begins March 21!

Professor Levinson, undergrad Zachary Jones, and recent alum TJ Wiethorn attended the LSA in Pittsburgh over the weekend. There is always such a diverse range of research presented, but of note were two full sessions on scalar structure and more experimental work in "theoretical" sessions. Contact Professor Levinson if you're interested in getting copies of any of the handouts.
