Student Spotlight: Maya Heatley

In March, Maya Heatley, a fourth year Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies major, presented at PAX East in Boston, Massachusetts. PAX East is the largest growing gaming convention on the East Coast, and Maya's senior thesis was attended by over 70 people!

"I joined the Honors Program because I wanted to challenge myself beyond what I believed I could do. I love doing Honors Options and getting the chance to work with my professors one-on-one, and I love the community I’ve found here. The Honors Program gave me the chance to really challenge myself and further my education in a way I didn’t think was possible as an undergraduate. It has given me the skills to confidently go into graduate school."

Student Spotlight: Parker Bourns

Last month, Parker Bourns, a graduate student in the Political Science/Public Policy BS/MS program, participated in the Bataan Memorial Death March at White Sands Missile Range. The annual event honors the prisoners of war who were forced on a deadly march by Japanese forces during World War II in the Philippines.

Parker and his team traveled to New Mexico, camped overnight, then completed a 15.6 mile march through the desert while carrying 40 pounds of food in a rucksack. Due to record breaking heat, the course was shortened from its original 26.2 miles, but Parker and his team already plan to return next year.

Last Friday, we hosted our final Honors Hour of the year with kickball! Students took a break from the end-of-semester stress and got competitive with fellow Honors students. The weather was not ideal, but it was a great time all around!

It may have been our last office event of the semester, but there is still another council event before the year ends! Join the AEC for a study session this Thursday, 4/23. Snacks will be provided and we hope to see you there!
