CIS is dedicated to pushing the frontiers of imaging in all its forms and uses. Through education leading to BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Imaging Science, we produce the next generation of educators and researchers who develop and deploy imaging systems to answer fundamental scientific questions, monitor and protect our environment, help keep our nation secure, and aid medical researchers in their q

uest to conquer disease. From how light is generated to how the world is perceived, imaging science addresses questions about every aspect of systems that are used to create, perceive, analyze, and optimize images. Imaging Science is both truly interdisciplinary in its content and multi-disciplinary in its applications.

🌞🌏NASA sure was good to Imaging Science this year. Leiani (Imaging Science undergrad) spent her summer in Pasadena, CA working at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Her project focused on modernizing and expanding the capabilities of the MISR INteractive eXplorer (MINX).

📸📸 MISR is a SpectroRadiometer that views Earth from 9 different cameras, allowing for scientists to determine things like smoke plume heights, wildfire activity, and aerosol properties. She was focused on converting the existing MINX software from IDL to Python and developing a more modular framework that has the capability to support additional products and data.

Alex Gregor (Imaging Science undergrad student) was featured for his internship with NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration! Alex has been working as an Orion optical navigation software and hardware development intern at NASA’s Johnson Space Center this summer.

He's been spending the summer analyzing and calibrating cameras for the optical navigation system used on Orion and other spacecraft in the JSC’s Electro Optics Lab.

This ultimately helps ensure spacecraft are being tracked accurately by ground equipment and can also serve as a backup system, leading astronauts home automatically in the event of a loss of communication with Earth.

RIT is a key partner in the initiative, bolstering the region's laser technology, manufacturing, education, and workforce."

"A goal of the NSF Engine STELLAR program is to educate and build a stronger workforce in laser technologies. Students, like RIT imaging science Ph.D. student Muhammad Akif Qadeer, receive hands-on learning on ultrafast laser enabled optical fabrication and integrated photonics in Professor Jie Qiao’s Advanced Optical Fabrication, Instrumentation, and Metrology Laboratory."
