Hi everyone,
My name is Skip Flanagan, NTID Athletics Coordinator.
We have a lot of updates to announce. First, I want to address overall league updates and funding, as well as changes to scheduling, systems, and upcoming events.
RIT as a university is facing several challenges, including funding and student enrollment. Many departments are required to make changes, and that includes us.
I recently met with the intramural department, and there are some adjustments we need to make to accommodate the new budget. This means there will be some changes.
The intramural department wants to ensure continued support for the DBA and DVA leagues moving forward, but we also need to work together to make this possible.
Here are the main adjustments. The DBA and DVA leagues will now run only on Friday nights—there will no longer be games on Saturdays. We will still have 16 teams as usual, with the same court reservations.
The number of student workers will be reduced from four to two (not including the co-op student and myself). For officials, we’ll be using referees provided by the intramural department, and more details on that will be shared soon.
All scheduling and league information will be available on the IMLeagues system, as all leagues will use this platform for consistent and smooth scheduling and announcements. Please check your email—you’ll need to create an IMLeagues account to see the schedule and updates.
The playoffs will move to a single-elimination format. All teams will participate in the playoffs starting November 14, with two rounds (two games for the winners), followed by semifinals and finals the next week, with some break time in between.
The signup period for DBA remains the same: Monday through Friday during the first week of school, August 25–29.
I understand DBA is now only on Fridays, so we’re adding a second table for Sunday intramural league signups. Intramural league signups will run a bit longer than usual.
On Sundays, we now offer 5x5 basketball, 3v3 basketball, and volleyball, with skill levels for beginners, intermediate, and advanced players.
Registration opens Monday morning and will fill up fast. We’re here to help you with the signup process and want to make sure you maximize all opportunities, even with these changes.
Intramural registration starts at 9:00 AM sharp and closes at noon on Wednesday, September 3. Intramural leagues begin September 7.
DBA sign-ups will be August 25–29. We’ll have tables available for you to sign up for both leagues at the same time.
If you want to put together a super team and compete in the Sunday leagues, now is the time to gather your friends and form a team, then come sign up for the DBA or DVA leagues.
All games will be livestreamed on YouTube. Please remember that intramurals still have a no-spectator policy: you come in, play your game, and then leave. The games will be recorded and available online.
There will also be additional events and tournaments for different sports throughout the year, so keep an eye out for those. We’re looking to add pickleball, kickball, flag football, esports, and many others.
Lastly, it has been 10 years since I started my role here at NTID. This chapter will close soon. I’ll be transitioning to a different role on campus —I’m still here, but a different role. I will stick around to make sure to support you and DBA / DVA, my role will shift to the co-op student.
Then after that- there’ll be more to update.
So, I’m looking forward to having a great semester. I know there’s a lot of changes- but I believe in the community. Take care.
See you all on campus soon!
