Rochester Institute of Technology Model Railroad Club - RITMRC

Rochester Institute of Technology Model Railroad Club - RITMRC Founded in 1996, we are a student club devoted to the hobby of model railroading and the history of Rochester's railroads. All students are welcome!

We meet every Tuesday at 8:00 PM in Room 2520 of the Student Alumni Union. Our clubroom A420, is located in the basement of the SAU. We are currently building our second version of the Rochester & Irondequoit Terminal Railroad in HO scale. Many of us also volunteer at the Rochester & Genesee Valley Railroad Museum. If you're interested in trains, scale models, electronics, software, history, and more, come down and join us!

Happy Valentines day railfans!

We've had a pretty busy last month or so, so here's a brief recap! Our club visited the MIT's Tech Model Railroad on our way to the Amherst train show in Springfield MA!

Some of our club members (Theo, Miles, Justin, and Drew) built modules during an NMTA N scale module build session to display at the show, which was awesome to see at one of the biggest train shows in the world!

Today, we had a work session where we made great strides in continuing to build our model railroad, and we can't wait to show off the finished product during our Image RIT open house in April!

As many of you may already know, our club was at risk of losing our club room without a suitable replacement. We want to sincerely thank all of you for helping demonstrate just how important our club is to the community.
We recently met with RIT Student Life, who have extended our relocation timeline and committed to finding us an appropriate new space. They will not require us to move out of our club room until a new space has been secured!
In the meantime, we will continue building and improving our layout in our current room until a new space is secured.
We are excited to confirm that we will again host the RIT Tiger Tracks Train Show and Sale this year on December 12-13th and will continue hosting Tiger Tracks for the foreseeable future!
Be sure to visit us during our Open House on April 25 as part of Imagine RIT to see the latest updates to our layout.
Thank you again for your continued support!

🚨 Crucial Call to Action: Support the RIT Model Railroad Club! 🚨 Obviously attend their show this weekend… but there is a more serious issue at hand regarding their club at RIT.

The NMRA strongly believes that college model railroad clubs like RIT's are vital. They are more than just hobbies; they are engines for fellowship, bringing together students from diverse fields to collaborate, build relationships, and gain real-world skills in engineering, project management, and community leadership. For some students, this club is a critical part of their college experience—even a reason they chose RIT!

Tragically, after nearly 30 years, the RIT Model Railroad Club is facing eviction from their dedicated club room, which will lead to the destruction of their decades-old layout. A model railroad club cannot exist without a permanent space for a layout. Losing this room, and the layout with it, is equivalent to dismantling the club entirely. The amazing Tiger Tracks show, which supports the club and is the second-largest student-run event on campus, will also be lost to the Rochester community.

The NMRA is calling on the entire model railroading community to SUPPORT the RIT Model Railroad Club in their fight for survival!

Every signature shows the administration the immense value and support this organization has from students, alumni, and the broader community. Let's help ensure the longevity of this incredible student organization and the legacy of Professor James Scudder!

Update regarding our current situation:

We recently met with some of the higher ups at RIT regarding our situation. The only requirement which has changed is the order to dispose of 50% of our assets, which is no longer the case, though we will still need to reduce our inventory. The timeline of the most important issue, the loss of our club room, which we have occupied for 30 years, has not changed. We are currently due to submit an inventory list by February, and still set to be evicted from our room of 30 years in April. We still do not know what will become of our room after we are removed.

Although the administration has offered to try to support the club to find a new room, RIT has made no offers of, nor commitments to, a new location for the club. We are still searching for an alternate space in other departments, though to no success.
We are a model railroad club. Our operation relies on a model railroad layout, which requires a permanent residence. Currently, we will no longer be able to have and maintain a model railroad layout come April. Although RIT’s intent may not be to get rid of our club, preventing our club from having a model railroad layout is equivalent to dismantling our club.

We must thank everybody for your support, as it gives us the ability to push for the preservation of our club.
