Society of Professional Journalists at Oakland University The Oakland University student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. We are a student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists located at Oakland University.

Our group works to further the mission of the SPJ. We also work together with local news organizations through our Oakland News Service. We provide quality freelance articles to those organizations.

Attention all journalism students and soon-to-be graduates!!!

Just a friendly reminder:

Our mentors SPJ Detroit is hosting an awards banquet on Wednesday, April 17. Tickets can be purchased on the website.

Al Allen (who retired from Fox 2) and Ron Dzwonkowski (who retired from The Detroit Free Press) will be receiving Lifetime Achievement Awards among other attendees who'll also receive Excellence in Journalism awards from a variety of categories.

"This banquet is the ‘Oscar night’ for Metro Detroit journalists," according to Walter Middlebrook, chapter president and assistant managing editor of The Detroit News.

It's a great opportunity to network!

SPJ presents Excellence in Journalism awards April 17
Metro Detroit Journalists will gather to receive Excellence in Journalism awards April 17 at the San Marino Club on Big Beaver Road in Troy.
“This banquet is the ‘Oscar night’ for Detroit metro journalists, and we invite all news people and friends of the media to come,” said Walter Middlebrook, chapter president and an assistant managing editor of The Detroit News.
“SPJ Detroit is proud to honor our journalist colleagues and the news media for the region’s best professional work during 2012,” he said. “They have served the public superbly throughout a year of extraordinary news-making events.”

IRE is bringing its highly rated Watchdog Workshop to Lansing on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14.

This training will offer several of our core sessions that will improve your ability to find information on the Web quickly, and point you to key documents and data that will help you add depth to your daily work and produce quick-hit enterprise stories. In addition, this workshop will give you tips on bulletproofing stories, digging deeper on the Web with social media, search engines and much more.

These sessions are designed for reporters, editors, and producers from small, midsize and large publications, TV, radio stations, Web-only news sites and news blogs. Freelancers, students and journalism educators are also encouraged to attend. Join IRE's experienced trainers and a group of veteran reporters for our Watchdog Workshop Saturday, April 13.

Expected speakers include: Jane Briggs-Bunting, Michigan Coalition for Open Government; Jeff Gottlieb, Los Angeles Times; Robin Luce-Herrmann, Butzel Long; Megan Luther, IRE; and Phil Williams, WTVF-Nashville.

A big thanks to everyone that came out to the event today. We had a pretty good turn out! Middlebrook is a phenomenal speaker and will definitely be considered for future events.
