Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Rochester

Department of Modern Languages and Cultures at the University of Rochester MLC In the Department of Modern Languages and Cultures (MLC), we combine the study of foreign languages, literatures, and cultures.

Our students and faculty explore literary and cultural theory. They do so both within specific national traditions as well as across national and disciplinary boundaries. MLC offers:

• Elementary through advanced language instruction in Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, and Spanish
• Elementary through intermediate language instruction in Korean and Portuguese
• Advanced course

work in literature, culture, and comparative literature

The department also houses the interdisciplinary Russian Studies Program. Faculty and students examine literature, popular film, visual art, and non-literary texts in relation to their historical contexts. The goal is to question traditional assumptions about gender, ethnicity, and nationality.
