When Eileen Pestorius '61 nearly had to drop out of Nazareth University due to her family's financial hardship, one person changed everything: Sister Rose Angela, Nazareth's dean of students. She quietly gave Pestorius $50 from her own desk drawer (twice!) so she could finish her degree.

Now 86 and living in Maryland, Pestorius has repaid the investment in her thousands of times over through the Eileen McGee Pestorius Scholarship. She has helped generations of Nazareth students facing the same financial stress she once did, and she has a planned gift that will grow the fund even further.

Along the way, Pestorius has continued to learn and develop new skills. She raised four children as a Navy wife, taught at every grade level from elementary school through college, traveled across Europe more than 25 times, and most recently reinvented herself again as editor-in-chief of her retirement community's magazine.

Sarah Read says she’s gained as much outside the classroom as she has being in the classroom! From being a peer leader guiding new students and an intern in her career field, to studying abroad in South Korea and working on campus, she says "Naz kind of helped put the wind underneath my wings".📚💜

"I'm not just learning my technical skills, I'm learning how to be myself and be a person," says Read, who’s majoring in visual communication design. She’s built skills in leadership, collaboration, organization, and — maybe most of all — demonstrated initiative.

As she goes into senior year, she shared that community is what stands out to her the most about her Nazareth education. “Naz backed me up and gave me the support I needed to go forth and thrive.”

Anthony Bray spent years in jobs that paid the bills but weren’t the right fit, including at a bank, a nonprofit, and a first-grade classroom.

He enrolled in Nazareth University's master's program in business analytics and AI — and before graduating, he was hired as a business intelligence systems analyst for an arts and technology nonprofit he values. He loves using his new skills to build data systems and solve real operational problems with code. "It was like someone afraid of heights who goes skydiving and finds out they're amazing at it. I feel like I've discovered a new superpower."

He appreciates the grad program’s pacing, flexible format, and skilled faculty: “It’s an education that’s truly worth your money."

Nazareth University mourns the passing of Virginia "Ginny" David, whose distinguished legacy is marked by five decades of dedication to the social work profession and the Nazareth University community.

After receiving her BA from Nazareth in 1968 and her MSW from Syracuse University in 1976, Professor David joined the Nazareth faculty in 1977, and throughout her tenure, she achieved the rank of full Professor in 2004, served as Department Chair for 13 years, and held numerous significant leadership positions across the university and in both the BSW and MSW programs. As a dedicated mentor and educator, Professor David continued to serve as an active Faculty Emerita, supporting faculty and teaching MSW students through the past summer.

Ginny served as a pillar of the Social Work Department at Nazareth for more than 45 years. As a scholar, colleague, and servant leader, she consistently promoted collaboration and the empowerment of others. She demonstrated a particular passion for social work ethics, ensuring that her students graduated with the strong moral foundation essential for professional practice. Her commitment to education, dedication to the social work profession, and passion for Nazareth University will continue to inspire the community.

All are welcome to gather and support Ginny’s family during this time of deep loss. Calling hours will take place at the Anthony Funeral Chapel (2305 Monroe Avenue, Rochester) on Tuesday, August 25, from 4:00 to 7:00 PM. A Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, August 26, at 2:00 PM in Linehan Chapel at Nazareth University. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Ginny’s husband, Claude; her children, Rachel and Rich; her son-in-law, Ted; and her beloved grandchildren, Eleanor, Vivian, and Jude.
