40 years ago today, the nation watched the Challenger Shuttle explode on TV. If you were born before Jan. 28, 1986, you might still remember where you were and what you felt. Please join me in taking 73 seconds of silence to reflect on the lives lost and the legacies of Dr. Ronald E. McNair, his fellow astronauts, and the explosion. Wednesday 1/28/2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the Challenger explosion the killed Dr. Ronald E. McNair and his fellow astronauts. The anniversary is being commemorated with events all week in Dr. McNair’s hometown (Lake City), Florence County School District, at the Statehouse (Wednesday around 2 pm). The Winthrop McNair Scholars Program will be represented at these events.
