Congratulations to English major Meghan Miglorie on receiving the Rosalind Sallenger Richardson Rising Senior Scholarship! 🎉

The Richardson Scholarship was created by Jerry Richardson, founder of the Carolina Panthers. His gift honors his wife, Rosalind Sallenger Richardson, who attended Winthrop in the late 1950s, and provides a sizeable scholarship for a student in their final year who has demonstrated financial need and is in good academic standing. Students must be nominated by faculty/staff to be asked to apply.

We are excited to welcome Dr. Renée Vincent to Winthrop’s Department of English as our new Assistant Professor of African American / Afro Caribbean Literature!

Dr. Vincent's research examines disaster in African American and African Diasporic literature and media, with a focus on how literary narratives produce and disrupt knowledge about race, gender, and environmental injustice. Her current book project, "Ecologies of Vulnerability: Reading Hurricane Alley Literature through Disaster Criticism," interrogates literature from the U.S. Gulf South and Caribbean through the lens of critical disaster studies. Her scholarly interests also include folklore, Gothic literature, and speculative horror. Dr. Vincent teaches courses in literature, writing, and interdisciplinary humanities that invite students to examine how literature (re)shapes our understanding of history, culture, and the environment. She is thrilled to join the Department of English at Winthrop University and looks forward to getting to know and working with Winthrop students this fall.

Winthrop English BA and MA alum Eliza Wilcox defended their dissertation "Between Femmes: A Literary History of Femme Embodiment" at the University of Tennessee Knoxville Department of English, and Winthrop English BA and MA alum Katie Ellen Bowers defended her dissertation in education at the University of South Carolina. We are so proud of you both! 🎉🦅

We are excited to be offering a second section of WRIT 307: Fiction Writing with Instructor Bagwell in Fall 2026! This section will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30-1:45 p.m. Registration for this course is open now!

WRIT 307 will equip you with the tools to tell your stories, by introducing you to foundational elements of fiction writing craft: characterization, plot, point of view, style, dialogue, and much more. Student writers will draft and revise original stories, sharing their voices with a community of serious artists. We’ll learn and put to practice professional editorial skills. We’ll also read diverse contemporary short fiction and discuss publishing practices. A variety of writing exercises and experiments will help you generate original works of fiction. You will share these stories with the class in workshops, and then you will extensively revise with the goal of creating your best art to share with readers.

☎️ London’s calling! You have until August 1st to apply, register, and put down a deposit for ENGL 321: London’s Calling: Longing, Love, and Lust in British Literature. Please reach out to Ms. Kara Beasley, the course instructor, at [email protected], or use the QR codes on this flyer for more information and to apply. Students will earn 9 cultural event credits for this travel course!

ENGL 321 will focus on British writers for whom London and its surrounding areas provided great inspiration. Consideration will be given to the intersection of cultures and to the influence of place of composition. A trip to London and Stratford-upon-Avon in December-January will be an integral part of the experience. The course will explore a diverse sampling of British Literature and analyze various modes of writing. Students will also apply literary theory to uncover cultural and sense-of-place insights in this genre. Some films will accompany major works. In addition to close reading, students will complete a variety of writing and discussion (group) assignments. The course is open to all majors and meets the GNED Humanities & Arts requirement.
