I just had the best reminder of why these summer programs are so valuable.

One of our summer program students’ moms told me that her daughter was recently looking through the courses she took last summer to decide what she wanted to sign up for next year.

Her daughter is still using the photography program she learned in her Phone Photography class, and she’s even been showing all of her friends how to use it!

Hearing that made my day. She didn’t just take a class and move on to the next thing. She found something she enjoyed, kept using it, and was excited enough about it to share what she learned with her friends.

That’s exactly the kind of lasting impact we hope our summer programs have

Did you know that Rock Valley College’s Center for Learning in Retirement (CLR) has been part of our community for more than 30 years?

CLR began in 1993 with just five classes and 186 members. From the beginning, the program was built around a simple idea: retirement doesn’t mean learning stops. Instead, it can be an opportunity to explore new interests, meet new people, and continue learning simply for the joy of it.

CLR quickly grew, reaching nearly 2,000 members and more than 78 classes within its first decade. Members have long played an important role in shaping the program, helping develop courses around the topics and interests they wanted to explore.

Today, CLR continues that tradition by offering adults 50 and older opportunities to learn, connect, travel, and stay engaged with their community. From history, science, and the arts to technology, wellness, current events, special-interest groups, and educational trips, there is always something new to discover.

More than three decades later, the heart of CLR remains the same: lifelong learning, shared curiosity, and the belief that it’s never too late to learn something new.

Here’s to more than 30 years of learning, connection, and discovery at Rock Valley College! 📚

Instructor Spotlight - Massage Therapy

One of the strengths of the Massage Therapy program is the variety of instructors and professionals who bring their experience, specialties, and perspectives into the classroom. Together, our instructional team helps students build confidence, develop strong hands-on skills, deepen their understanding of the body, and prepare for a career in massage therapy.

We’re proud to provide a supportive, hands-on learning environment where students learn from instructors who are passionate about massage therapy and invested in their success.

The class is designed with neurodivergent individuals in mind, including those who are self-diagnosed, but everyone is welcome. Family members and caregivers are welcome to participate, too.

Come explore some new ways to slow down, refocus, and support your wellbeing in a welcoming environment.

Home Improvement Tip: Know What’s Behind the Wall

Before drilling, nailing, or cutting into a wall, make sure you know what’s on the other side. Studs, electrical wiring, and plumbing can all be hidden behind drywall. Use a stud finder with wire-detection capabilities when appropriate, and avoid making assumptions based on where outlets, switches, or plumbing fixtures appear to be located.

A few extra seconds of checking can prevent turning a simple home project into a much bigger repair.

That gives you a natural connection to drywall, electrical, and plumbing without basically giving away the content of any one course.

We have several upcoming home improvement courses including drywall, electrical and plumbing repair: https://cce.rockvalleycollege.edu/homeImprovement
