Monasteries and Marriages

Some years ago, Nathan Oates was visiting a Benedictine monastery in Europe. Intrigued by the structure, discipline, and spiritual milieu of the monastery, he asked the monastery's Prior, Father Cassian Folsom, how the American church might better align with the monastic vision. Father Cassian replied, "A better parallel for the monastery is not the church but the home." Have you thought of your marriage and home in monastic terms?...

Nothing or Something?

It's a well-known saying from Jesus: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God" (Matthew 5:9). In a more gender-sensitive age, translators have sometimes opted for "they shall be called children of God" (New International Version). That might sound more inclusive but the translation might also miss something important. Let me return to that in a moment....

Impossible Peace

Every year finishes with some commentary about the coming of the "Prince of Peace" (Jesus). We sing Silent Night and proclaim "peace on earth and goodwill among people"...then get back to reality. Peace can seem like wishful thinking. The world is aflame with violence and conflict. The war between Russia and Ukraine is about to hit its four-year mark. In recent days we've seen military attacks against ISIS in Syria, terrorists in Nigeria, and the abduction of the President of Venezuela....

Merry Christmas 2025

Dear friends, Merry Christmas! This week we celebrate Christmas. Some of us will be with family or friends. Others will be alone. Some of us will have homes filled with busyness and noise. Others will experience silence and solitude. Some of us will reflect on a year of growth and success. Others will look back on a year of loss and hardship....

The Voice and the Breeze

God seems to speak regularly and clearly to some folk. They receive a word from the Lord or deliver prophecies with some consistency and clarity. He tells them stuff; all the time. I'd like the same, but He's not so chatty with me. After decades of following Jesus, that audible Divine voice seems as elusive as ever. I might wonder what's wrong....

God’s Yes; My Yes

I got away this weekend for a prayer retreat. Just 24 hours. I had to squeeze it onto the calendar, but it felt urgent. I needed answers. I wanted clarity. I imagined that if I created some space for God to show up and if I gave Him my ear for an extended time, He might have some guidance for me....

Happy New Year

It's November 30, and "Happy New Year" is not a typo. I'm not a month early. I am right on time. Today is the first Sunday of Advent, and the start of the Christian year. If you are unfamiliar with Advent (which literally means "the coming"), it is the four Sundays before Christmas and denotes the season of waiting for a Savior....

When the middle of our lives is a mess, what might God be doing around the edges? It's easy to grow preoccupied with the hard thing right in front of us. Right? Perhaps it's a financial challenge or a marriage that ended with death or divorce. Maybe the mess is in your workplace or church. People lead poorly or misbehave badly....

Jacques Lusseyran was a blind French resistance fighter during World War II. He was not born blind, but an accident at the age of seven left him completely and permanently blind. His friends and neighbors talked about it as a total disaster, but his parents refused to pity him or describe his plunge into darkness as unfortunate. Instead, his father, a deeply spiritual man, reframed the experience and said “Always tell me when you discover something.” His father understood that blindness was just a precondition to discover things others could not see....

The story of Bartimaeus in Mark 10 is our story. Take a look with me for two minutes... In Mark's Gospel, the story forms the hinge of the entire book. Jesus has just finished several years of itinerant ministry, especially in the northern region of Galilee. Now He is heading to Jerusalem for the fateful final week before His crucifixion. As Jesus travels through Jericho (about 20 miles from Jerusalem) He passes a blind beggar named Bartimaeus who is sitting on the side of the road....

Could it be true? Could it be possible? With all the talk about "knowing Jesus" and "intimacy with Jesus," might we need to also take a step back and acknowledge that it's possible to become too familiar with Him? Mark 6 opens with an unexpected and unusual story about Jesus. Mark writes that Jesus "came into His hometown and His disciples followed Him" (Mark 6:1)....

Hard times often drag us down. They tend to turn us inward and preoccupy our thoughts. We can easily find ourselves anxious, depressed, afraid, and isolated. Indeed, the valley also has a way of reshaping our spirits. Before we know it, pain displaces our sense of purpose, and complaint replaces joy. It happens a lot. How might we turn this around?...
