The Northwest Arkansas chapter of the Arkansas Mental Health Counselors Association Guests are always welcome to come join us!

The purpose of NWArMHCA is to recruit, unify and organize the practice of mental health counseling so as to add to a unified voice to advocate and advance the profession of mental health counseling in coordination with the state association (ArMHCA). NWArMHCA is a great way for NWA area counselors to socialize, network, and earn CEUs. We meet once every other month at the John Brown University cam

pus in Rogers for a 2 hour CE program (10am to noon). We meet on the 3rd Saturday of every other month (Jan/Mar/May/July/Sept/Nov).

Brief Synopsis: Counseling theory is an important part of our work. In fact, we are ethically mandated to use a counseling theory with our clients. In our time together, I will offer some insights about effective ways to integrate counseling theories to ensure we are ethical and effective when working with our clients. I will share my integrative counseling theory approach as an example which starts with an Adlerian approach. Our time will include discussion with the hopes you are able to take this material and directly apply it to your clinical practice.

Dr. Ryan Cowell is a licensed professional counselor and supervisor in the state of Arkansas and a PhD in counselor education and supervision. He completed a masters in Marriage and Family Therapy and Clinical Mental Health. He currently works with clients through a Family Systems lens and an Adlerian therapy approach. He specializes in working with trauma and marriages. Before joining Liberty University faculty, Dr. Cowell worked as an Assistant Professor and Executive Clinical Director.

We counselors are professional conversationalists. We are paid to discuss people’s lives. After an intake session we write a treatment plan. We compose a note after each meeting. We draft letters at a client’s request. We might be called upon to testify in court. Language pervades all of our work.

This workshop will focus on our oral use of language in our interactions with clients -- the talk therapy we provide. Topics we will touch on: when and how to use questions, handling profanity, capturing client quotes, the judicious use of jargon, verbal analogs to “healing touch,” the language used in the session (English, Spanish, ???), repairing communication breakdowns, adolescent lingo, and helping clients find their voice. The Communication Disorders portion of the DSM-5-TR will be mined for insights on how to help people with linguistic deficits.

The format will involve scenarios which will be discussed in pairs and then with the whole group. Participants will be encouraged to share their experiences. The presenter will sprinkle in insights he has garnered from his study of several languages and his training in linguistics. He will provide a list of resources for further study. The goal is to empower clinicians to better engage verbally with their clients.
