Ballet Folklorico de Sonoma

Ballet Folklorico de Sonoma Ballet Folklorico de Sonoma is made up of SSU students who perform for campus and community events. Practices are Tuesdy's and Thursday's from 6-8pm.

Ballet Folklórico, "Mexican Folk Dancing", is made up of traditional folk dances that have derived from different regions of Mexico. Each region has its own unique style of dance, music, steps, costumes and choreography. Ballet Folklórico is a great way for students on campus to show and share their culture, and for others to learn and experience this tradition. Our organization creates a cultural

environment at Sonoma State University and builds a diverse community to represent traditional values through the art of dance.

General information

"Amalia Hernandez, from Mexico City, founded the first school dedicated to Ballet Folklórico in 1958. On the U.S. side of the border, Ballet Folklórico was popularized in the 1960s and 70s, specifically in Los Angeles and El Paso, two cities with large Hispanic American populations, as a way to promote pride in Mexican cultural heritage and to enhance self esteem. Today, many young men and women in the Sun City, and throughout the nation, enjoy learning, practicing and performing Ballet Folklórico. This artistic form of communication unites Hispanic Americans across the country, giving them a sense of community and cultural pride, as well as allowing the community to share their heritage with others."
