The Hutchins School of Liberal Studies at Sonoma State University is an interdisciplinary school within Sonoma State offering students an alternative educational program that integrates material from the humanities, social sciences and the natural sciences, leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree. The Hutchins School has several distinctive features:

- An emphasis on active participation in one's ow

n education, on self motivation and on learning to learn
- Small, seminar-type classes
- Close cooperation and a feeling of community among students and professors
- A diverse faculty, with each member trained in more than one field of study, to help students learn how to approach a problem from several points of view
- Courses organized around themes or questions, rather than according to the traditional division of subject matter into disciplines
- Encouragement to engage in independent study projects and internships to bridge academic studies with career placement and community service
- An opportunity for student-instructed courses

The goal of the Hutchins School is to challenge students to launch extraordinary lives. We do this by providing exceptional educational experiences based on active, student-centered learning within a community of peers. Close advising and mentoring, opportunities for self-discovery and student enrichment are the hallmarks of the Hutchins curriculum. From convocation to commencement, we strive to foster a transformational community of critical thinkers with a passion for lifelong learning.
Hutchins is proud of our network of alumni, who have gone on to successful careers in a multitude of fields, everything from education to business to public service to creative endeavors of all stripes, all sharing the goal of making a difference in the world.

Hutchins is finally joining the 21st century with our communications and are looking to connect with our amazing alumni! We have revamped our website, launched our social media accounts, and are busy creating lots of opportunities to share with you. What have YOU been up to? We would love to check in with you, hear any updates you have to share, and look forward to meeting in person or virtually for great conversation!

Also, we would like to introduce you to the Hutchins Community Connect Group on S.S.U.’s networking platform, PeopleGrove.

When joining the Hutchins Community Connect group we will:

Connect with other members (Hutchins alums, current students, faculty and members of the larger SSU community)

Join Hutchins events and seminar discussion series virtually or in person

First up: Let’s get connected through PeopleGrove. We will use PeopleGrove to house our email communications, conversations, events, etc.
