🩺 Alumni Spotlight: Gaurav Pahouja, M.D. ('17)

Congratulations to NEOMED alumnus Gaurav Pahouja, M.D. ('17), who recently joined Grand Lake Urology at Grand Lake Health System in St. Marys, Ohio, as a board-certified urologist.

Dr. Pahouja earned his undergraduate degree from Kent State University before attending NEOMED and completing his urology residency and chief year at Loyola University Medical Center in Chicago.

His practice includes care for kidney stones, enlarged prostate, overactive bladder and urologic oncology. For Dr. Pahouja, returning to practice in a close-knit Ohio community is also an opportunity to help patients receive specialized care closer to home.

“I want every patient I see to feel heard, understood, and confident that they are receiving the highest level of urologic care.”

We’re proud to see another NEOMED graduate making a difference in communities across Ohio. 💙

🌾 Before NEOMED, there was a farm.

It’s hard to imagine today, but more than 50 years ago, the land we now know as the NEOMED campus looked very different.

In 1974, trustees approved the purchase of the 53-acre Bryan F. Jones farm in Rootstown as the future home of the new Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine. The purchase price: $250,000.

At the time, newspaper headlines simply called it the “Future Med School Site.”

The location along State Route 44 was selected in part because it provided a central home for a medical school being built through a partnership among Kent State University, The University of Akron and Youngstown State University.

What happened next transformed this stretch of farmland. Ground was broken, the first academic building rose from the fields, and in September 1977, members of the charter class arrived in Rootstown to begin the medical portion of their education.

Today, that former farm is home to a health sciences university with colleges of medicine, pharmacy, graduate studies and dentistry.

But look closely at these photographs and you can still recognize where it all began. 💙

🩺 Alumni Spotlight: Nadia Asif, M.D. ('19)

For families with a sick child, getting the right care shouldn’t have to mean traveling hours from home.

NEOMED alumna Nadia Asif, M.D. ('19) is helping expand pediatric care in Erie, Pennsylvania, as a pediatric hospitalist at AHN Saint Vincent Hospital. Her work is helping more children with complex medical needs receive care closer to home — while also helping train the next generation of physicians.

Dr. Asif also helped restart an outpatient pediatric clinic and was recently named one of the Erie Reader’s 2026 40 Under 40.

We caught up with Dr. Asif to learn more about her journey from NEOMED to pediatrics, her work in Erie and the advice she has for today’s medical students.
